Place book cover as first ToC entry.

Kobo Glo, sideloaded epubs via Calibre. Glo doesn't open a unread book at the book's cover, it opens at the first page of text. As was explained to me here, https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=275576, that's normal for epubs, but a Kepub will open at the cover, as does Calibre and Droid. Would it be possible to add a feature to a plug in which will insert the book cover as the first entry in the ToC in order to open epubs at the book's cover ?. |

I would like to add a column in Calibre to show which books have DRM and which do not. I envision a column heading DRM with Yes or No in the field for that book. Is there a plugin available for that, or is there another way to accomplish this that I may have overlooked?

Well, what I am finding is that some books that are in my Calibre Library now will come up and say they cannot be viewed because of DRM. It would be nice to identify which books that are already in my library have DRM. That is why a column for that would be nice. It sounds like it is a lot of trouble so I may have to resort to discovering them as I go along. I have 11,606 books in my library so it may take awhile. Thanks for your quick reply.

The Quality Check plugin has a function to search your library for epubs with DRM. I don't know if there is an equivalent for other formats.

Simply select all the results and add a Tag 'DRM Infested" No other special PI needed No Custom column needed (avoids DB bloat)

Splendid. Thanks for putting me straight, davidfor and theducks. I didn't know (or had forgotten) that that facility already existed!

I mostly hang here in the Software section. You do work all over the board. (I am also, Old School (when RAM and CPU were expensive), when it comes to DB's. Don't store data that can be re-computed

 Non-ebook Formats

Calibre is great for cataloging many things. It started as eBooks, then moved to audio books, and documents, etc. As a catalog management system it is my favorite. Maybe my situation can be addressed by an existing Plug-In, I tried to search but did not find anything yet. I find a need to catalog design files that are not traditional document file formats. These files are for machine embroidery designs. Common file format extensions are .VP3, .VIP, .HUS, .PEC, .PES, .PCS, .xxx, .SEW, .JEF, .EXP, .10*, .DST, .SHV, .DHV There are several programs that machine embroiderers can use to "read" the files, so the ability to link these file formats to that external "viewer" is not necessary. Besides being able to import these file formats into a single "book", also able to add .PDF and .ZIP, thus keeping the design files associated with their color change instructions and the artwork. I would want to draw the "cover" image from either the .PDF or an image file. Author name would be the Vendor's Name for filing within Calibre. Just for a point of reference, machine embroiderers are currently paying for design file "management systems" that are nothing more than Windows File Folders for grouping based on a single keyword. The ability to bring our files into Calibre and associate numerous keywords (as well as the Vendor Name) would be like giving every machine embroiderer a major Christmas Present. I hope this plug-in is possible and that someone will take on this project. |

@ddjohn - you probably don't need a plugin. You you can add any file type to calibre, but for non ebook file types -- i.e. not in Preferences->Behaviour->Use internal view for -- there is limited functionality - no conversion, no editor, no metadata download etc. You can only have one file of any type in a 'book' - so only one .VP3, only one .PES, etc. If the file type has an OS file association, then calibre will use it as a 'viewer'. Within calibre you can associate other programs with a file type, in this recent post 284, you can see I have added Balabolka, Sigil and WinRAR to EPUBS via calibre's Open With option, and in that example you can see I have a .ONE file (from MS OneNote) for the book. You may have to add the cover images manually, which is easy enough, just drop an image file into the Book Details sidebar on the right (bottom if configured thus) If all the files for a given pattern are in separate folders you can use one of the Add Books from directories options. I have calibre.exe in my Windows Send To folder, to add a book(s) I select the file (e.g. an FLV) in File Manager, navigate to Send To->calibre in Windows context menu and hit enter -- I always edit the file name to be 'Author - Title' to match my Add Books template. If you're mouse centric you can drag and drop the file(s) into the book list. To add a file to an existing book I drag and drop the file into the Book Details sidebar - file names are irrelevant in this instance. BR |

@ddjohn: BetterRed has covered a lot of what is needed. Plugins are only needed if you want to be able to pull metadata from the files. If the metadata needed, "author" and "title", are in the filename when you add them, then calibre can get this. But, if you need to read the file contents, a metadata reader plugin is needed for each type. These aren't that hard to write, but it needs knowledge of the file formats to find the metadata. Plus some knowledge of Python to write the code. To me, the biggest problem will be finding someone who is interested in doing this. Your best bet is to find someone who wants the function and does some coding. Or someone who has a spouse with the skills. If you can find someone, then we can help with pointers and sample code. |
