Yes, I still think of "luxuries" in terms of that $50. At 9 years ago prices: the Oasis would be not smoking for 6 weeks. At today's prices: about 2 weeks. It amazes me how fast that money we aren't spending on cigarettes adds up. So no, one does not have to be upper middle class to have nice things.

Considering I read on it every single day and reading is about my main hobby, its worth it for me. Do I have to save up for stuff like that? Of course. I drive an old Kia and can't afford a house. So its got nothing to do with that. I save up gift cards and shopping points for my kindle devices. Have done so since I bought my first the K1. And that one cost me more than the Oasis. Its all a matter what you spend money on. I don't collect shoes, I carry the same purse for years and years, I don't buy expensive makeup. Its called budgeting. I would not have been able to order the Oasis if I hadn't had the points saved up. You know, pay all bills with a card with a nice cash back and then pay off each month. Save up the points for shiny gadgets. I seem to have enough each year for 1-2 gadgets, depending on the price. Mostly kindle gadgets. It comes down to what you need. I can't read on a phone or tablet screen, so I must have a e-ink device. Its not an option, its a must. I must have buttons so my hands don't hurt so bad. And it seems I must have real buttons as even the haptics are hurting my hands as its hard to grip and press at the same time. |

Dunno if it will really take till Sept 2. I just put a merlot Oasis in my cart (didn't click BUY yet, but I'm real close...) It said it would ship between July 1 and Aug 3. Already placed pre-orders have to ship first, so your dates may already be moving earlier? (As people cancel pre-orders, etc)

So, it's the day after the official release date (and if it's not, you're just slow!), where are the first impressions from you guys! I don't care about those "others" who won't even take the trouble to go to this forum...

Well, it's been off the charger since the full charge Tuesday. I had it and the cover on charge while I downloaded all the books I had on my Voyage. I haven't connected it to power since. I've done about 2-3 hours reading yesterday and today (normal day). The Oasis shows 94% while the cover shows 55%. I read without the cover and when I put the book down, the reader goes back into the cover. I don't know if that's good or bad. TBH, I've never really paid attention to the charging requirements of any e-reader. They very rarely leave the house (I've broken too many!). So, if I run the battery down, I simply plug it in. It's never been an area of concern for me. It seems comparable to the Voyage. But, I'm really not a good person to ask cause I just read until it needs charging... Marilyn

Well I got my Oasis from John Lewis last night and it is tiny! Surprisingly easy to hold to read (I have the cover folded back). I just compared the size to my PRS350 and lengthwise very similar - about 3mm shorter (obviously the screen itself is bigger) but ~1 3/4cm wider.

One thing I wonder is if putting it in and out of the cover frequently will drain the battery faster. But I've also been doing a fair bit of downloading with the Oasis, so the battery life isn't too happy about that. I think it will be hard to tell exactly what the battery life actually is like until some of us get out of the "Ooo, shiny" phase.
