KU Payment

I saw this posted today, I thought it was worth putting here. The October KU payout amount per page was 0.004809 of a cent.

Take off the "of a cent." It's about $.0048 --not quite half a cent per page. They calculate the page by a formula that takes into account fonts and so on. The rumor/speculation is that the payment will continue to go down until the average book is paying out at about 1.30 per book (These are guesses based on past payouts and on where the stars point to Amazon breaking even or making money off the subscription service. But it's all a guess). The only thing not a guess is that the payment trend has been down. VERY, VERY slowly, but down.

That's still about two cents. 0.004809 dollars per page makes more sense, which would be two and a half dollars for a 500 page book.

If you're going to be "technical", 0.5 cents and 0.005 dollars would be a better expression.

You mean overall author earnings? I had 3 books in the program for a short time and yes, during that time, my earnings dropped on Amazon significantly. Other authors report the opposite. I don't know if it has to do with putting all your books in the program, time of year (more people read in the summer? Winter?) or some other factor(s). It was not a success for me, but other authors have said their books were "discovered" by readers by getting into the program. I had more borrows via SCRIBD on a monthly basis than I did while in Amazon's program.

I don't think it's genre dependent as there are authors in every genre having success with the program--and also those who have had no luck with it.

Do authors get paid by the page for Kindle Owner's Lending Library (the once a month Prime book) books, too? Or is the payment scheme different for KOLL books?

I had to go look, but KOLL is now under the same payment--we get paid only based on pages read. From the rules I read, if someone takes months to read it, we'd still get paid (because sometimes people get their KOLL and then don't get another one for several weeks/month).

I thought they had left the KOLL as borrow=paid, but apparently not. If they read it, we get paid. If they borrow and forget, we don't.

(Full disclosure: My books are now all out of select/exclusive with Amazon. The rules no longer affect me.)

If I clicked through the KU book to the end on Kindle Cloud Reader, I guess that would mean the author would get paid for the whole book, as it's been read, while I could download and transfer via usb and leave my Kindle in airplane mode with a clear conscience?

You do have to click through each page. Just going to the end of the book doesn't register it as read. But essentially, you have the idea. If you never connect your Kindle to Amazon, that is the only way the author would get paid!

I hope so, because that's how I do it with my once a month free book.
