Colleen McCullough dead at 77 ....

The wonderful Australian author Colleen McCullough has died at the age of 77 in the Norfolk Island Hospital. McCullough had lived on Norfolk Island since the 1980's and had married a local man Ric Robinson. I greatly enjoyed her books The Thorn Birds, Tim, An Indecent Obsession and others. What an intelligent woman she was - a neuroscientist by day and an author by night for many years. Link to the ABC Article: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-01-2...h-dies/6055952 |

How much pleasure she brought to those of us lucky enough to have read her books! I've been thinking it is time for a re-read of The Thorn Birds.

I loved The Thorn Birds. I sampled a couple of her subsequent books, but was never able to get into them.

I haven't read any of her books but recall when Thorn Birds was first published (that dates me a bit ) and it has always been in my mind to put my not having read it to rights. So might have to bump The Thorn Birds up to the top of my "To Read" pile and as an incentive I now have a copy. |

I remember "The ladies of Missalonghi" as a delicious read. Edit: I've just discovered it's going to be published as ebook on March, so it's in pre-order now Last edited by Terisa de morgan; 01-30-2015 at 12:47 AM. |

I remember the Ladies as a great read and wonderfully reflected a time gone by when women did handicrafts and read to 'improve their minds'.

The Thorn Birds looks far, far more readable than Catton's The Luminaries (which has, with time, disappeared into my "Never to Read" pile). Anyways, I am sure I will enjoy it, Australiana such as A Town Like Alice, For the Term of His Natural Life, Letters of Rachel Henning, etc. have always gone down well with me. | |

A sad loss to us all. I read the Thorn Birds many years ago, and liked it, but I really loved her Masters of Rome series set in the last days of the Roman Republic. I had hoped that the series would be continued, but the effort she must have put into the research for what is almost a work of scholarship as well as fiction probably precluded this given her age and health.

A very sad loss. I too loved the Masters of Rome series and intend to reread it. I've never read the Thorn Birds but I do remember the television mini series. My association is more with Rachel Ward than the story though. I'll have to put a hold on it at the library.

Rachel Ward and Bryan Brown met as a result of making the Thorn Birds mini series and they're still married and living in Sydney today.

There is some controversy over her obituary in an Australian paper.
