My Windows 8.1 does not include this. I have Avira Free and it works great. I need all the protection I can get because Swagbucks is full of junk like malware or viruses.

Maybe Blossom can help me. Got my mom a laptop. it is Windows 8.1 It had McAfee installed as a 30 day trial. I removed it via the control panel installed MBAM and downloaded and tried to install MS Security Essentials. When I started to run the program I had a box pop up to tell me something about MS Security Essentials was part of Windows Defender.

My question is do I need to buy and install an anti-virus or is the computer covered. I do not want to be worrying about viruses on her laptop.

I bought a new Windows 8.1 laptop over the holidays and ended up researching this same thing. Yes, MSSE is part of the Defender package on 8.1 which was pre-installed on my Yoga 2 Pro.

This is the answer I have been looking for. I have Windows 7 and only use MS Security Essentials with Malwarebytes. I installed Malwarebytes on her computer but was unsure about anti-virus. I am not fond of McAfee but that is me.

Windows 8.1 is MUCH better than 8.0 and quite good/easy to use, but I suppose you know from your mother's computer. My husband has a win 8.1 (Sony) tablet that he uses for work and he is very happy. He uses MS OneNote frequently for drawing mathematics equations, etc.

I bought my 14" laptop to use mostly as a Calibre library. It has 4GB RAM and a 500 GB disk and was only about $250. It is perfect for my needs. I store thousands of books in 5-6 libraries.

I have never checked out Windows 8.0 I played around a little with 8.1 but I really prefer Windows 7. From my understanding 8.1 was not a lot different than 8.0 just some changes in the home screen.

A basic computer is not enough for me. I need more power. I use my computer for work and home use. I have narrowed my selection down to 6 that I like but nothing definite until I know more about windows 10. I might not change if the reviews are bad but looking at early reviews they had stated it is better than Windows 7. But who knows with Microsoft.

My advice is too stay away from Windows 8.1 it's buggy and has alot of issues. Wait for the next windows which should be better. Windows 8.1. was MS intro O/S into the app market and it has alot of problems because of this.

Blossom this is why I have not purchased a new computer. Every other version of Windows is great. 10 has to been good. If not I am going to stay with Windows 7 until they no longer offer updates then I am moving to either a Mac or I will install Linux.

I wish I had Windows 7. I have never fought more with a O/S well Windows ME was just as bad but it's been a very long time.
