^ No, the actual texts are in translation. If you want the originals, the Perseus site at Tufts University is pretty good for those, and they're even hooked up to a dictionary look-up for any words you might have difficulty with. |

Wow! That book certainly goes against everything that I've heard. Now, just who do you believe??? Do you believe the weight of the majority of scholarship on the matter, or do you accept the very minor opinion of this author? I strongly tend to follow the majority opinion on scientific questions. Would reading just this one book put the issue to rest in my mind? I don't have the time to research all of the different positions. Who can I rely on to have/tell the truth on the matter? As far as the Mediterranean diet is concerned, a friend of mine recently was advised by his doctor to go on the diet, based on the results of some blood work. He has already been slowly changing over the way that he eats to this diet entails. Now I wonder if he's doing the wrong thing. Anyway, thanks Lynx-lynx for your post of the book. 89% (or More) Off on a Book about the World War I Battle of the Somme

This is a great book; at least Somme people think so. The Somme: The Darkest Hour on the Western Front. By Peter Hart. Rated 4 stars from 80 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $17.95; digital list price $17.95; Kindle price now $1.99. Pegasus, publisher. 386 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Somme-Darkest-...+Western+Front. This ebook is $1.99 at Kobo, also, and discountable: http://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebo...-western-front. Book Description (from Amazon) One of the bloodiest battles in world history—a military tragedy that would come to define a generation. On July 1, 1916, the British Army launched the “Big Push” that was supposed to bring an end to the horrific stalemate on the Western Front between British, French, and German forces. What resulted was one of the greatest single human catastrophes in twentieth century warfare. Scrambling out of trenches in the face of German machine guns and artillery fire, the Allied Powers lost over twenty thousand soldiers that first day. This “battle” would drag on for another four bloody months, resulting in over one million causalities among the three powers. As the oral historian at the Imperial War Museum in London, Peter Hart has brought to light new material never before seen or heard. The Somme is an unparalleled evocation of World War I’s iconic contest—the definitive account of one of the major tragedies of the twentieth century. |

Another Inexpensive Ebook on a War/Military Subject

Have you noticed what a high percentage of posts on this thread are on the war/military subject or a related topic? I just offer that as an observation, I have no analysis to share. Incredible Victory: The Battle of Midway. By Walter Lord. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 80 reviews at the present moment. Digital list price $14.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Open Road Media, publisher. 306 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Incredible-Vic...ttle+of+Midway. Book Description Outgunned and outmanned on the Pacific Ocean, a small American fleet defied the odds and turned the tide of World War II On the morning of June 4, 1942, doom sailed on Midway. Hoping to put itself within striking distance of Hawaii and California, the Japanese navy planned an ambush that would obliterate the remnants of the American Pacific fleet. On paper, the Americans had no chance of winning. They had fewer ships, slower fighters, and almost no battle experience. But because their codebreakers knew what was coming, the American navy was able to prepare an ambush of its own. Over two days of savage battle, American sailors and pilots broke the spine of the Japanese war machine. The United States prevailed against momentous odds; never again did Japan advance. In stunning detail, Walter Lord tells the story of one of the greatest upsets in naval history. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 10-28-2014 at 05:27 PM. |

An excellent account by Mitchell Zuckoff. One does not need to be an aviation or military enthusiast to enjoy this incredible and true story. Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2011: Near the end of World War II, a plane carrying 24 members of the United States military, including nine Women’s Army Corps (WAC) members, crashed into the New Guinea jungle during a sightseeing excursion. 21 men and women were killed. The three survivors--a beautiful WAC, a young lieutenant who lost his twin brother in the crash, and a severely injured sergeant--were stranded deep in a jungle valley notorious for its cannibalistic tribes. They had no food, little water, and no way to contact their military base. The story of their survival and the stunning efforts undertaken to save them are the crux of*Lost in Shangri-La, Mitchell Zuckoff’s remarkable and inspiring narrative. Faced with the potential brutality of the Dani tribe, known throughout the valley for its violence, the trio’s lives were dependent on an unprecedented rescue mission--a dedicated group of paratroopers jumped into the jungle to provide aid and medical care, consequently leaving the survivors and paratroopers alike trapped on the jungle floor. A perilous rescue by plane became their only possible route to freedom. A riveting story of deliverance under the most unlikely circumstances,*Lost in Shangri-La*deserves its place among the great survival stories of World War II. --Lynette Mong Free on Amazon (U.S.): http://www.amazon.com/Lost-Shangri--...rs+in+benghazi |

New Guinea was an Australian theatre of war, and it was a known fact at the time that some of the tribes were still headhunters. Overall though we couldn't have did what we did, and survived in the numbers that we survived without the support of the 'fuzzy wuzzy angels' (The native men). The Japanese were also very wary of the PNG people and called them the 'grey ghosts' because of their abilities to blend in and take very swift warrior actions. (No, I haven't read the book - but the Kokoda Trail, and other battle grounds of PNG, are etched in the historical mind of every Australian because of the bravery and endurance of all who served.) |
