Calibre Editor generates Windows Navigation Start.wav sound

Go to the editor and go the the code input and press the Shift key. You should hear Windows Navigation Start.wav, which is an annoying click. Oddly, it makes this sound everytime you press the SHIFT key even when Calibre isn't maximized. Furthermore, I deleted Windows Navigation Start.wav from my computer and it still makes this sound, which means that Calibre has copied the sound and included it in the application, however I checked out Calibre's folders in Program Files (x86) as well as AppData and there are no sound files to be found!

Not happening here - Win7 64bit. Yes I did check my sound settings, and I know that 'standard' sound - bit like a fast shutter click

The Volume control mixer shows which applications it knows about, a process of elimination should enable you to see if any of them are generating the click.

BTW my Windows folder has 29 Windows Navigation Start.wav files, all of which have multiple hardlinks - see attachment.

Deleting every single one of those fixed the issue. That was satisfying.

Problem is that if you ever have to run a System File Check it may put them all back again.

Something is playing the wav file, it could be a keystroke logger - whoops there goes...

It is possible that you have "Sticky Keys" turned on in Window's Ease of Access Center (or whatever it is called in your particular version of Windows to assist those with disabilities).

This will give a sound when the SHIFT key is depressed.

Yep, that is sticky keys. Nothing to do with calibre.

Surely if it was Sticky Keys then the OP should have been hearing the 'you just pressed SHIFT' click everywhere - not just the calibre book editor?

Unless the OP would like to confirm that the phenomenon stops when calibre is exited?

@eschwartz - If you turn Sticky Keys on it works everywhere, including the Reply to Thread text box at MR, and it shows an icon in the notification zone of the taskbar.

Also if the OP was only hearing the click, and only in the calibre book editor, then that is indeed odd... because Sticky Keys not only works everywhere, but as well as issuing clicks, it also squeaks, and they're far more intrusive :lol:

By Sticky Keys I really meant all the bits thereabouts including Filter Keys, etc. and as just something to look at, because -

As Mr BR says the effects should be global but as Mr Schwartz says "Isn't Windows fun?"

- in my own case if I play around with the accessibility keyboard settings much I end up with a dead keyboard (it is on a USB hub on my monitor) which is worse than clicks

, so anything can happen.
