I am late with the New Years resolution, but I am going to try to limit my buying to less than 100 books for the year. I've bought 2 so far, so I only have 98 left. If I come across a sale that would let be finish up my Georgette Heyer collection, I will be in some trouble. But, we shall see!

I broke my own resolution today too, picking up the second book in a series, and at full price, no less. But at least I had an old gift card for Barnes & Noble, so I bought it there and converted it instead of buying at Amazon & paying for it myself.

Does it count if I didn't spend my own money? Thankfully there's enough on that card to cover the next couple of books in the series still!

Have you already read the first in the series? Are you reading the second in the series that you've just bought immediately?

If the answer to both those is yes, then it's just permissible. But one should never buy at full price something that's just going on your TBR pile, even with a gift card.

My resolution is to: one, read more than I did last year (27 books, several of them quite large) and two, read more of my digital backlog. If I accomplish the latter, then three, increase my digital backlog. I didn't buy many eBooks in 2013.

Yes to both--it was one of those I'm-not-ready-to-leave-these-characters-just-yet things. I dove right into the next one. But even so, in the cold light of morning, I'd agree it was just barely permissible. It's not like I lack reading material.

Well, I do usually take a hit at the start of the month, with subscriptions (Grantville Gazette and F&SF) and the Baen Bundle (just four this month).

So really, it's read four, bought three…. And I shouldn't buy too many in the rest of the month. I only have a little over $10 left in my budget anyway!

Well, I bought one digital graphic novel (as individual issues) on New Year's Eve, and four more on Friday. Only paid (slightly) more than half-price for one of 'em, and just finished reading the last of the five. The other markdowns were closer to two-thirds off...

That's good, right?

I will certainly be carrying forward any unused budget. I'm hoping to build up a cushion for possible sales next November/December.

What I will not be doing is spending funds now from future months - a definite recipe for failure.
