Just to clarify, will it work on PW1 5.3.9? Changelog doesn't seem to mention it, so it's kinda ambigous.

running 5.4.2, updated just the other day.

just to confirm, I did not extract the zip which contains the 2 .sh files and the .bin file, put it in the main folder of the kindle

I was just wondering how safe the jailbreak is. If I end up bricking my PW2 in the future are there any recovery tools to restore it to stock? I'd like to try to port a driver to it, or write it from scratch if necessary. Though I imagine it will take some time.

Depends on just how badly you "Brick" it -

As long as it will still allow you to place an update file on USB storage, you can restore it with the Amazon provided 5.4.2 update file.

But if you "Brick" it worse than that -
There is no way known (yet) of putting it into USB downloader mode **WITHOUT** using the serial port.

So start out your project in a safe manner -
Get your serial port connection working;
Enter U-boot;
Load BIST;
Use those commands to load your experimental software to ram and run it from there.

**Never**, **Ever**, flash experimental software unless you have JTAG access to the device (you don't).

and the menu item "update your kindle" stay gray when a extract the files into the root directory of it.

I can't get the simple usb network to work on my kindle. When i try to connect using Putty on pc or terminal on linux, i just get the message: "Connection refused". I have spent 2 days trying trying lots soulutions I have found via google and this forum. But unfortunately nothing has worked.
My kindle is the PW2 Wifi only International edition (B0D4). I'm running the latest firmware (5.4.2) and I have tried to uninstall and install simple usb several times.
I'm really sorry i have to bother you, but I have really made an effort to fix the problem myself.

You need to add an authorized_keys file in the correct directory, that contains your SSH public key to successfully connect to the SSH daemon running on the Kindle, as far as I know.

I think you can't even identify any other way.

Most frequent problem:
The cable has two ends, and two IP addresses, one for each end.

What IP address is set (in the Kindle) USBnetwork config for the Kindle end of the cable?

What IP address is set (in your PC) config for the PC end of the cable?

What IP address are you trying to access when you get "connection refused"?

I have manually assigned an IP address of 192.168.2.1 and netmask of 255.255.255.0 in the TCP/IP(v4) to the RNDIS network in windows on my pc. I try to connect to my kindle through Putty (username: root)by using the 192.168.2.1 adress again. When i do that i get the "Connection refused" -message. When I try other ip's like "192.168.15.201" for RNDIS and when i wanna connect "192.168.15.244", i get the "connection timed out" -message.
