Is your computer running XP by chance? XP has issues with MTP devices which the Fire HD is and the original Fire is not. Due to these issuse, Calibre by design does not recognize MTP devices on Win XP via USB...you will need to transfer books wirelessly (not by sideloading). I'm a little out of my league here, but something you might try....(we have a vista laptop and I hate it and so don't use it). When the issues with the Fire HD were first being addressed in XP before it was decided not to support it, there was a lot of discussion about having the most up-to-date version of Windows Media Player (since the fire is seen as a media device). You might check to see if you have the latest version of WMP and its associated drivers. Good Luck!

On your vista laptop with the Fire HD connected to it, make a calibre device detection debug log and post it. 1) Start calibre 2) Go to Preferences -> Miscellaneous 3) Press the Debug device detection button 4) Copy the results to the clipboard and post them in this thread. |

First it is chaley not charley. The directions work with any Windows version, but the user doesn't have access to Windows 7 or 8. He has access to XP and Vista (Wife's laptop). The XP machine failed to show anything, hopefully the Vista machine will give us enough data to help further. |

The fact the XP machine doesn't show the device is entirely expected; XP has no support for MTP devices.

Additionally some folks can find finer support for MTP devices on XP here. Calibre most likely will still not support you because of many problems with the implementation on XP but you may get your XP machine to recognize your phone or tablet outside of calibre. | |

I have no first hand experience, but in the beta testing for MTP on calibre some users got MTP on XP to work with calibre but there were too many problems so support was dropped. Personally since in theory Microsoft is dropping support for XP in April 2014 I think it is a good time for folks to investigate paths to upgrade to a newer version of Windows or move over to Linux. Most likely both paths are viable on their existing hardware and they both support MTP with calibre. |

I personally do have an XP machine, which I use as a network file server (why throw out a perfectly good desktop?), and I can confirm from personal experience that none of my MTP devices are recognised by it. That's with what was probably the last version of "XP Media Center Edition". It's a Dell machine.
