By not getting the new improvements. If not doing less is the goal, then there's no need for upgrades.

Don't you think you're being a little hasty in condemning Amazon? The new Fires haven't even shipped yet! Amazon have a pretty good track record in making new software features available on older devices.

I have a first gen Fire along with a Nook HD+. I will be skipping a year of purchasing a tablet as I am satisified with what I have.

Amazon specifically stated that the new OS was limited to new Fires only. If they intended to apply it to last year's Fires, they should have said so.

That doesn't some of the new features, like cloud collections, won't be imported to the previous gen. But the new os is built on amdroid 4.2.2, whereas the previous gen kindles use android 4.0

I was tempted....but no. I have a Fire HD 7. I just rooted it to Android Jelly Bean. I'm not going to buy another tablet that I can't put my own wall paper on. Shallow, I know! Plus that is really a LOT of money. Maybe next summer, they will have the HDX7 for less than $150. That would be more to my liking. But again, no wall paper, no fun!

AS long as the ereader works I ok... Thinking of replacing the K3 with a Paperwhite org. Battery losing reading time cracks in it from me dropping it a few time LOL KFHD good as new so no not thinking of replacement at this time!

Same for me.

I wouldn't buy a walled garden device from Amazon even if I was currently in the market for a new device. (Apple's ecosystem is as limiting, more so in some ways, but it is the only way to use iOS apps. For Android apps, I don't need to make the same sacrifices.)

I'm running a launcher on my HD 7 and I can use any wallpaper I want; just as long as it's midnight black

I recently purchased a Nexus 7. So I see no need to purchase a Kindle Fire or any other tablet for some time. When I was looking to purchase tablets, the KF didn't even make my list because I'm not heavily invested in the Amazon ecosystem and it wouldn't make sense to buy a tablet that is made exclusively for the purpose of consuming Amazon content.

NOT Rooted!! ,however running an alternative launcher& wall paper app plus nearly 60 side loaded Android Apps & games, (Such As Shadowgun& Nova ),
Just got a really decent 'Aliens" verses predator" Game from Amazon for .99 cents

I dont "Video Chat".


I read three books in the last 40 days still a have Huge backlog of Epub Books to
to read, ( Mostlyl Sci Fi),

The new Kindel Fire Lineup looks Quite nice but
I simply do not need another tablet device at this point.

Forgive my totally off-topic curiosity, but how do you actually buy something for ".99 cents". You give them 1c, but how do you get your 0.01c change?

Technically, that would be 9.9 mills [1 cent equals 10 mills] but only the taxing authority goes to such small quantities. Gasoline is typically charged in dollars, cents and mills: $3.999.

I know. I was a little surprised to hear that Amazon allows people to set prices that don't correspond to actual coinage. It seems rather pointless.
