I always strongly opposed the Amazon way of doing things, but you make some valid points. I would have bought a Kindle a long time ago if it had additionally supported ePUB alongside their own proprietary format. |

![]() As much as I like my 650, there was no store integration before the T2 (on the T1, the link was leading nowhere) and there is no French dictionary. So in France, the Sony products are racing with some disadvantages. The good software and the evernote integration seem to have been selling points. On a French Sony forum I can see several people who were expecting some frontlight on the T3. I have no idea whether it's going to sell well here ![]() Edit: from the way I use it, the communication with Calibre seems as good with Kobo as with Sony. |

Would you be kind enough to point out to me where in Amazon's licence agreement they state that only books bought from Amazon can be used on the device? Why would they provide the ability to load your own books if you were only "supposed" to use ones bought from them?

I think that's a fair point. Why should an e-reader be limited to it manufacturer's store? The business model is proprietary and excludes competition. You buy a Kindle and you have to buy a book from Amazon and only Amazon. Sure you can buy from other stores, strip DRM and side-load, but how many users can do that or can be bothered to do that? Amazon doesn't even allow users to use epub and has created its own format to discourage users from using other sources. Sure, you can convert, but again, not many users are able to do this. The business model is extremely aggressive. At least Kobo reads epubs. This is part of the appeal of Sony to many users. It is the most open platform of the three big players.

I don't understand why people let their obvious like (or dislike) of one company's e-reader cloud their judgement over others, so much to the point they need to try and come up with reasons to validate it - usually reasons that have only a small kernel of truth to them too, as alvina (IMHO), is doing here?

But this is a bit annoying for some people. I really don't understand why, but so it is. And since a good Reader from Sony doesn't need all this, since you can simply pug as many different Micro SD cards as you like into it, smart people simply buy a Sony. ![]() |

Don't the truly smart people buy something like a Nook ST because it can currently be bought for a ridiculously cheap price, very easily modded and install their reader app of choice on it so they can read any book from any store?

Some of the comments here are so laughable and don't even deserve a comment or rebuttal.
