The timing is right; the market is wide open for an Android STB/Gaming box at under $99. Not hard to do, either; it is essentially a FireHD without a screen. (And with some further GUI tweaks.) They can use it to sell unbundled Prime Video subscriptions as well as Freetime subscriptions. If they get the price/bundled app combo right, they could also take on Roku and other streaming boxes. As far as Amazon rumors go, this one is eminently reasonable. Which means it probably is wrong. |

This is all tied into the Washington Post buyout. Instead of just reading the news they'll make mini video games out of it. First person shooters to take out your frustration. Solve the next global economic crisis before it happens. Slowly pull the arms and legs off of the traditional publishing industry... oh sorry that's Eeevil Jeff's personal game and won't be made available to the general public. They can get the youth interested in news again. |

I really hope this happens! Would make my TV that just sits in the corner useless. Plus, I have close to 1,000 apps and games from the Appstore I could try out on it. |

Or the Shield or the dozen or so generic Android STBs floating around. Where Amazon has the edge is that they have their own appstore, their own media services, their own gaming studio, and a loyal customer base. They already have an XBL/PSN style gaming community on the FIRE, too. http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.htm...cId=1000807511 Their box is likely going to be an STB first and a gaming box second but if they do go for it they'll hit the ground running with a few million upfront sales. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuMQjKiaDTg Last edited by fjtorres; 08-09-2013 at 06:32 PM. |

This still sounds like a set top fire to me and I can't wait. The games are in place. The movies and music too. HD has bluetooth for controllers.

I can't see there to be market as a gaming device... But if they provide on demand video and streaming services it might work out for them... |
