In theory, I'll pre-order if there's a substantial discount. But I've almost never done that.

If there's a discount involved I'll happily pre-order if it's something I know I want and I have done so many times. If there isn't a discount, what would be the point?

I'll pre-order print books for the few authors I still buy that way. I also pre-order from some stores if there's a good sale. Otherwise I wait until release day or later. |

I don't pre-order ebooks. If it's not something I'm likely to remember the release date of, it's likely not something I really want or would read right away anyway. However, I'd probably put it on my library waiting list if available. I only read purchased ebooks after they've been disinfected (and converted to epub if necessary) so it's not like there's any benefit to me pre-ordering (books I like never seem to get discounted).

Unless the pre-order for a digital good provides some discount or incentive, what's the point? Pre-orders for physical goods make sense if there's a chance of limited supply. That's literally impossible with an ebook (or digital music, videos, games, etc). It's impossible to "run of bits" in that way. If an author or publisher tries to artificially limit a digital good ("Only 5,000 ebooks will be available for sale"), then they don't get my money. |

eBooks no - unless there it is free. DVDs and paper books for my kids, yes. Since Amazon has a pre-order price guarantee, I'm cool with it. |

I'll probably buy the book, but only at the time I'll actually start reading it. I got over the "must have it at release date" habit over 10 years ago, for any media. Often you'll pay more, while the media sits on the shelf for another year for whatever reason. |

It depends on the author. There are a very few authors, whose books I will pre-order. For all other authors, Iwill not pew-order unless the eBook is either free or heavily discounted.

I pre-order hardbacks, especially signed copies, but have never pre-ordered an ebook (or paperback).

I've never pre-ordered a book or any other item, and I don't believe I ever would.

Depends. If it's a new book, I'll wait. Read some reviews after it comes out. If I like the author's other works, I'll order now if it's got a crazy low price on it. If it's a book that I've read on paper, I've been waiting for as an ebook, and it's got a great price on it, I'm much more likely to order it now. I guess I'm all sorts of iffy. |

For a very few books, I pre-order, but otherwise not. Weber's latest Safehold novel I'd preorder. C.J. Cherryh's next Foreigner book is available for pre-order--next April! A little bit of pre-order is good, but that's going too far. You do pay extra, but it's a bit like ordering an e-ARC book from Baen. I'd do that for a couple of authors--Bujold and Lee and Miller. Worth the extra money to find out what happened next. Jim |

I will consider The Baen Monthly Bundles as a form of Preorder, so I voted yes
