On an unrelated note, my 1440x1080 Aura is a much nicer eReading platform then my 160x160 PalmPilot was.

I would like this too. It's a feature request for me though. I would like the epub-reading bugs fixed first.

When you bring up the menu in 2.8.1 (on the glo), the top is noticibly larger...makes tapping the home button or changing the light much easier, and without losing that much text by having it blank when the menu is closed. Some sideloaded fonts seem rendered differently...2.6.1 had sort of darkened the one I was using (from 2.5.2) and 2.8.1 seems to have lightened it and the spacing looks weird or possibly the font sizes changed in the rendering. I don't know, but the book I had open looks different after the update. The Newspapers & Magazines section in the Library menu has disappeared. Surprised no one has mentioned it, though if one was already subscribing, maybe it didn't disappear? I like the how many pages per minute addition (for the glo only) in the reading life. I don't like that when I go into the annotations page I now have to pick a bookmark or annotations before I can do anything to it. That means if I want to delete a lot of bookmarks/annotations at once, each time I have to do one more touch. |

You can do a long press on the annotation to bring up the menu that you used to get by pressing the now-missing menu button.

Book details: metadata publisher and ISBN not displayed

The publisher metadata display bug is still there. The publisher name metadata is not displayed with sideloaded epubs. Kepubs are okay. Addition to this bug: ISBN metadata (same problem) B]Product[/B]: Kobo Aura HD, GLo, Mini and Touch Firmware: 2.8.1. Plugins: n.a. File types: epub (not tested for pdf or other formats with the exception of kepub) Sideloaded or from Kobobooks: epub On external SD: no Steps to reproduce:
Workaround: (provided by GeoffR): Use the KoboUtilities Calibre plugin to send the publisher/date/ISBN for sideloaded books. The device will display this information correctly if it is in the database, it just doesn't load it into the database from the book file by itself. Code: <dc:publisher>Random House</dc:publisher> <dc:identifier opf:scheme="ISBN">978-0-553-80780-6</dc:identifier> Last edited by Anak; 07-24-2013 at 04:18 PM. Reason: updated workaround GeoffR |

So you won't need more tap options, but I guess you wouldn't mind either. I can do that as well (so yes, it works), but I just don't like to. And because I don't want to change options when changing hands, I have developed a rather strange way of holding my Aura with my right hand just to be able to reach the left tap zone with my right thumb without opening either the bottom or top menu.

This firmware update seems to have fixed all the bugs I've complained about in the past, which makes me extremely happy. While the Kobo software isn't perfect, they seem to provide meaningful updates more consistently than anybody else.

One piece of absolutely rubbish UI design with this firmware, and the last couple, is the ~75 taps it takes just to adjust the freaking brightness - something I, and I suspect many others, frequently do. I don't know who the genius was who decided to move the brightness out of the bottom bar, where one could adjust it with two taps, but the way it is now is absolutely, mindbogglingly idiotic.

I am sure that a whole lot of people want more choices, but the specific of tap to go forward, drag to go back might be a bit more limited. I wasn't very good at saying that the first time. Some people hate one or the other, it seems. As someone with a disability that effects small muscle control some of the time, I would hate to have to drag. It's much more difficult than tapping is for me.
