@acidzebra: That's ok. I learned long ago that the world doesn't always agree with me. I'll just restate that it wasn't the "getting free stuff" per se that caused the issue, but I've already posted about that at length.

Now, back to the topic that really interests me now: think Torie will go out with me? At least I've got a good opening conversational gambit now.

Honestly, there is no evidence that I can see from out here that anyone within TOR thought that they were going to sell E-Books. It was a promotion for this web site and they decided to give away freebies like E-Books and wallpaper to promote it. It isn't any more complicated than that.

It isn't like TOR is the first publisher that put the occasional book in electronic format, but really wasn't intending on selling books in that format. When I go to conventions, I find small publishers all the time who either put samples or maybe even one complete book on CD to hand out to people to try their stuff. They do it because it is cheap to do things that way, but they want you to buy their p-books.

As for the whole Amazon thing, I think that's just Amazon trying to make some deals for their reader, probably not much different from the Baen deal. The difference there is that Amazon's stuff has DRM. I doubt that TOR has much to do with that deal beyond just making their materiel available to Amazon.

Which makes me wonder if the reason for the delay is to try to argue for non-DRM books. Certainly if they intend to release stuff through Baen they would have to go that direction. I could see that complicating things for a big publisher like TOR, tho.

I did get a replay and it was not dismissed as being antagonistic. I'm hoping what Torie said is true. If so, we very well might be getting Tor eBooks by 2009.

How often do you get to NYC? Now that the interweb has allowed the geeks to unite, the nerdgirls are more aware of their own value. You might need to approach the subject carefully.
If you really did get her angry, you might have an "in" there.

Just as a contre-point: I went to the tor site to see what all the hubbub was about. It was actually sort of refreshing that a corporate entitiy was willing to give the message of "We're working on it! Go away, boy, you bother me!"

Obviously annoying to some, especially the targets, but hear me out. When was the last time anyone was willing to be that honest with you to say that they were aware and that they were irked with being asked so many times?

(I could only find Nate's thread in the limited time I had, so I did not find Taylor's) I guess I'd call it refreshingly annoying.

I have no idea if they'll sell books that way, but it was good for a good chuckle, at least.

I don't think people are upset about getting the free ebooks; I'm certainly not. I think what most people are upset about is that they were given a tease without being told they were being teased. I would still have read the books, but had I known that they were only a tease, I would have put them at the bottom of the pile, waiting for the sequels to become available. I, for one, like to read complete series of books that I like but I buy either (sometimes both) ebook or hardcover versions, the latter only when it is an author I want to keep in my permanent collection.

Again, I think the sense isn't one of entitlement -- we all realize that we are not entitled to have the sequels or any book available in ebook form. I am not puzzled about it. That is what I expected. To me there would be no other purpose for giving away a free ebook weekly in hopes that I would then visit the forthcoming Tor.com. Had I been told upfront that the website was going to be a blog site, have no ebooks for sale, and that the ebooks being given away were going to be all the ebooks Tor would have for quite sometime, I would have immediately known that Tor.com wasn't for me. I am not the least bit interested in short stories or blogs. But by not telling me that and by giving me the weekly ebook, I thought I was going to have another place to buy SF/F books (full-length novels) published by Tor authors.

I guess it is just a matter of differing perspectives and expectations. Personally, I do enjoy a little tease, the short stories and blogs, and the free books were a nice bonus.

Maybe, but if she does, I would not take her to see the movie, "Tora, Tora, Tora" just to be on the safe side.
