someone who just downloads your software doesn't know who you are, they just need a program that does X and may have never even heard of your software until they came across it.they may even end up legally purchasing the next installment/update or whatever from you. to translate that to ebooks, if someone was selling and profiting off of ripped and burnt to dvd ebooks by selling them on ebay or flea market/boot sale, thats when it becomes piracy. someone "trying" a book from an author theyre iffy about doesn't meet the criteria imo.

My sincere apologies to all Canadians, I mainly remember her for representing Switzerland. Thought you had to be a national of the country you represented. This is however a tad OT for thsi thread, over and out.

And frankly, the software example you give is very naive, life isn't a feel good movie. Of course the uploaders are worse, but it is the downloaders' demand that keeps them going. And for a rich country like Switzerland to do something like that makes no sense at all. It is a slap in the face of all countries whose economy depends on such exports.

Furthermore, this legislation sends a clear message to the entertainment/music and publishing industries that they also MUST make changes. At this point in time any changes are small and token. Yet still they persist in providing an overpriced product that not many are interested in purchasing at that price. Never mind. The cave is warm and dry and that shelters them from the big bad world outside.

This legislation sends a clear message to the US entertainment industry that they must lobby the US government to put pressure on Switzerland to reverse this and will give them more ammunition in their fight to keep DRM and regional restrictions. I can hear them now "whole countries are legalizing theft!" Is that what you want? Not interested in purchasing those overpriced products? Great, then don't read or watch them -- that will teach them. And those products are much more expensive than they have to be because honest people pay the tab for the downloaders. This is exactly what big corporations are trying to do, that is to dictate and influence government policy to JUSTIFY their failed and anachronistic business models. It is a shame you cannot see that. Quote:
Bring prices and availability down and products will sell. Provide better methods of distribution. Use those litigation dollars and employ savvy forward thinking people instead of copyright trolls. That much is bleeding obvious....to some....

Both. Retail for a blu-ray movie here is between AU$35-50, a DVD will be around AU$25. To see a movie here will set you back AU$22 for an adult or for a 3D movie, that costs around $30-35 depending on the cinema chain and screen size. The last time I took my wife and youngest daughter to a 3D movie (Last HP movie) it cost me $120 (including one large popcorn to share and 3 small drinks) I can buy both DVD's and blu-rays cheaper from the UK than Australia and frequently do, but the cost is still far higher than it needs to be. |

A move like this does show how ridiculous it is to base an economy on designing things and yet paying someone on the other side of the world to build them. You end up with no real commodity to sell. Also, If Canada can't be in the Eurovision song contest, why can Israel ? |
