I just stumbled across something that may explain, at least in part, what is included in the latest 3.3 update that some are receiving: Press Release: AmazonLocal Coming to Kindle with Special Offers. In this announcement, dated 15 Sept 2011, Amazon states:

The functionality for receiving AmazonLocal deals on Kindle with Special Offers will be delivered as part of a software update for latest generation Kindles in the coming weeks.

I'm not sure why some people with non-ad Kindles have received version 3.3 because only KSO models are mentioned in the rest of this press release. Perhaps they'll be giving all K3 owners the choice to opt-in sometime in the future? AmazonLocal is launching in New York City and will be expanding to more cities later this year.

The WebKit version is in bold.

Based on the comments on here, this morning I tried to see if the browser would open new windows, and I couldn't get it to. I'm afraid I didn't spot anything else new in the browser either.

Can you go to http://whatsmyuseragent.com/ in the browser and post what the number after "AppleWebKit/" is?

I posted the User Agent for the 3.1 update above.

Just to emphasise, the bit I'm looking for is the bit in bold:

I knew it. More advertising. Why would I want that on my kindle? If you got a discount in exchange for advertising, that's fair, but I paid full price and don't think I should have to wade through ads.

IF they're actually going to enable advertising on non-KSO devices, perhaps they would allow us to opt-in/out. That wouldn't be so bad. I don't think I'd want ads on my Kindle, but many people have said that they would like to be able to take advantage of the offers.
