I'd like to chime in here and say that I have _never_ seen a forced reset screen. Some facts, to help others and Kobo themselves to debug the issue:

I am approaching one month of KT ownership
I read several times a week
I've certainly seen a manual reset screen -- but that's because I actually wanted to reset for one reason or another (in the first day or two, when I was setting things up and experimenting)
Currently running firmware 1.9.9, installed via initial sync with Kobo Desktop
I've connected to the KT with Kobo Desktop under Windows
I've connected to the KT with ADE under Wine (Linux)
I've connected to the KT by the automount under Windows
I've connected to the KT by automount under Linux
I've transferred books to the KT with ADE under Wine
I've transferred books to the KT directly with Linux (treating the KT as a USB storage device).
I've transferred a DRM library book to the KT with ADE
I've transferred non-DRM ePubs to the KT
I've never transferred books to the KT with Kobo Desktop
I've never installed or used Calibre
I've never purchased an ebook
I've never transferred a kePub book to the KT
I've never put an SD card in it [yet]
I am mostly in Airplane mode, but I had the Wifi on early in my ownership just to do some initial syncs
I always do safe disconnects, regardless of operating system
I do not wait any extra seconds after I see the "it's safe to disconnect" message, regardless of operating system. I unplug right away after that message.
I do not have many books on the KT yet -- maybe 10 to 20, and have only read 2 or 3 for more than a few pages.

My guesses as to the cause of the problem some of you are experiencing:

It could be caused by specific books which have problems. Also, based on what I've read on these forums, I don't trust Calibre, and I wouldn't install or try it, since I have been able to do everything with ADE (library books) and plain USB transfer (for non-DRM).

I have had my Kobo Touch for about the same length of time as Pistos. I have discovered that the reset problem was caused (in my case) by having a preview of a book on the Kobo then side-loading a copy of the full book.

As much as I hate the dreaded Storage Error my Kobo still works. I have cancelled through the error for several days (while I was away and not able to connect to my computer) and I have also done the reset twice.

I had to go replace mine at the store. The new one worked just fine up till a few days ago when the message appeared. I've been pressing cancel since then so that there is no risk of it completely dying on me like the first one.

Mine died too. Only managed to enjoy it for 2 days

Since the nearest store that sells the Kobo is a few thousand miles away, I had to send it back to Kobo HQ by mail. They need to check it thoroughly too see it's not damage they don't support before sending me a replacement, which they say will be a refurbished device and not a new one.

I just got my first eReader Storage Error after only 3 days with my new Kobo. I have have only loaded 4 books using Adobe Digital Editions. I have not loaded any books with Kobo Desktop or Calibre.

For now I have just cancelled the error message. Looks like I can still read my book.

I know that people from Kobo read these message board so since I have yet to hear back on my request #402508 other than it has gone to teir 2. I am getting very frustrated with this error continually coming up. I love my eReader but am getting to the point of going to something else. I hope Kobo realizes that this is not good customer service and starts to at least give some updates when people open trouble tickets with them.

How do you still update and download books. When I try and sync I get an error that says OOPs there is a problem with the internal storage.

Calibre: It's fine. I've been using it(and Sigil) for years. I've yet to find a better conversion app.

I put all the books I am reading plus a few in advance on a microSD so when this happens I only loose my place.

*sigh* Bought a book on the Kobo site which for some reason refuses to appear in my library on the site or the desktop application, but *does* appear in the purchase history (with a download link, so I can get it that way). I then hooked up my Touch and the desktop program, slapped sync, and had to do a factory reset. Once that was done, I used Calibre to move the book over (onto a cheap 4GB, which will be more than enough for me, micro SD I bought today) and delete the previews. Properly ejected, let it process. Another storage error and will have to reset again. :/

Seriously, do the other ereaders have anywhere near this many problems?

@JD Gumby: Well, not this whopper bug! And the patch is a loooong time coming for such a serious bug.

I am just reading a single book, putting the Kobo in Sleep mode when not using it. Now that I had the error a couple of times (cancelled both times) I am too scared to load new books.

Have others successfully loaded new epubs after they cancel factory reset errors?
