But there are plenty of legitimate 5 star reviews out there. Robert Bidinatto's book Hunter would be an example.

But this is noting new. For generations book reviews in print journalism have usually been written by other writers. They display many examples of logrolling as well as attempted assassination of hated rivals.

I always read the negative reviews first - or, well, often ONLY the negative reviews. And I often will peek at the score the same reviewer gave to other books as well. If they scored Dan Brown of Larsson high, they are out

Why is three stars a negative review?

Not only would I not click on the logroller's link, I would probably "demote" it by declaring it unhelpful.

Back in the day, Amazon had anonymous reviews. They were tied to your account, but you could choose whether you wanted your name to appear on there or not. One day Amazon had a glitch in the system where every anonymous reviews had the user's name on it. They discovered lots of authors praising their friends and panning their critics.

I think Stephen King is probably the most egregious example of bookjacket blurbing.

I agree. In my rating scale, 3 stars is a recommended book, probably worth reading if it fits in with what you like.

Very interesting! They can still do it, they just have to make up an account first. Slightly more work.

Only because Asimov is now dead.

I usually look at the lowest reviews. That way, I can see what people didn't like about a book, movie, app, etc.

I have given five star reviews, (and 4, and 3 stars). Everyone has their own idea of scale, and that is a real problem. I see it this way:

1- Dont bother
2- Eh, its okayish
3- Decent probably wont read again, but enjoyed at some level
4- An author/book to watch. Enjoyed
5- Guaranteed to follow this author and look for more books. this was great!

5 Star book as an example - Her Majesty's Wizard. Loved that, destroyed the pbook reading it over and over.Probably my all time favorite... but been 20 years since I owned it. Need to buy the ebook and try again

4 Star book as an example - Spinward Fringe - Broadcast 0 (enjoyable read, but had some serious gramar issues that made it hard in places, he has since put up a newly edited copy so that might help)

So if you know those two titles maybe that will help.
