The only way to do that would be to release the books in multiple formats without DRM. I reckon the only format supported by every device is plain text.

Google Books concept? On the web, with minimal downloads. Any device meaning any web-connected device? That would provide the "same experience" concept...

Ah ha !! Your secret is out, Diap ! You are a closet HP addict. ( That's the books, not the splendid brown sauce that helped create the Western world as we know it.. ) I'm sure you feel better for having made a clean breast of it. |

Seriously. Not to mention how many constantly "web connected" devices are out there? If you extract WiFi, which really depends on location, the only "new" device on the market with 3G would be the Kindle and...um... Sony? Do some of the Sonys have 3G? I never use it, so I can't say. Nope, I stand by my Wild Mass Guessing that the whole announcement will be wiped and retconned once the HP team does their research. |

Nah. It probably won't be web only. There are a number of ereaders that can't connect to the web directly. Even if you have an ereader that supports wifi, a wifi hotspot or access point is not always available. Heck, even with a 3G-capable device, there are times when you get spotty coverage or no coverage at all (e.g. when overseas).

The announcement said they were partnering with Overdrive to do it so you'd probably have to ask them. My speculation is that they'll be using the same solution that will be used to get the library books on Kindle. I haven't seen details on how they're going to do that either, but the time frame is about the same.

From the CNN article: "Rowling's site will be the exclusive sales channel for the Potter e-books, bypassing traditional e-book stores like Amazon's Kindle store, Barnes and Noble's Nook store and Apple's iBookstore. The Harry Potter series will be published in the open-source e-Pub format, which is compatible with any electronic reading device, including the iPad." |

So CNN hasn't heard of the Kindle, I guess....or do they know something about epub support on the Kindle that we don't....?

What source said they were partnering with Overdrive? Here is another article that says they will be DRM-free, but with a digital watermark to track the purchaser: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...-potter-ebooks That is new information that I haven't seen anywhere else, but I've never heard of "The Inquirer" (But I have heard of the "National Enquirer"....) eP |
