Sans serif font?

Let's limit it to free fonts.

The URW Fonts bundle contains URW Gothic L, which is a Century Gothic clone.

Look here:

There are some others in there you might like, including Nimbus Sans L, a Helvetica clone.


Similar clones can be found in the TeX Gyre bundle, which may contain more of the character set you need. Go here:

Another nice free general-use sans-serif font I like is Droid Sans:

There are a lot of other free sans fonts to choose from (if you know where to look): Deja Vu Sans, FreeSans, Liberation Sans, Luxi Sans, CM Bright, Bera Sans, etc. For something wilder, look at Jura. If you want to go really wild, check out the hundreds of decorative fonts provided for free by Larabie Fonts.

No clue whether these have the special characters you need.

I'm now using Calibri on everything. It's a great font, and it looks very clear on my reader. At the small size that my reader displays Calibri looks nice and chunky and it seems to improve contrast.

Recently I have discovered Ubuntu Font Family http://font.ubuntu.com/

At first I was afraid that it is too minimalistic. Relatively large x-height, "crossings" on letters 't' and 'f' are very unusual, 'r' looks weird. But, the result is very, very nice. In FAQ they say that "extensive manual hinting was performed" and I think it shows.

Great font. And free. And it comes in four weights - Light, Regular, Medium and Bold, in Normal and Italics

If anyone wants to talk about fonts, please use this thread as it has a lot of very useful information.

When publishers embed fonts, they usually use "Charis SIL". Charis does have one problem. When you use the default line-height it is too close. So the publisher uses a line-height of 1.2em. I find a line-height of 1.1em to be better. But some may like the default line spacing.

I like Calibri too!! It looks very nice, but I am thinking that it is good for non-fiction especially and will search for a fictional font.

For a fictional font, I like Fontin. I am also getting quite used to Charis SIL. I'm not a fan of sans-serif as the main text. But a good sans-serif works well for headers and titles.

I'd like to help with that as well. Perhaps a list of fonts under open licenses such as the Open Font License and Ubuntu Font License and another list of font under the proprietary licenses such as Myriad Web and Minion Web? If so, I can create the pages and we can all start working on it.

I've been through a LOT of fonts, and always find my way back to Minion Caption. I haven't changed it in over 6 months, nor will I likely. I should have taken screenshots of each when I was actively changing my fonts, but for the most part they displayed too light or frequently cut off at magins.

I'll certainly support Minion, which I never fail to admire, and the Caption variant works well on eInk. But it's not much use for those creating ebooks they want to distribute, as there's no way to licence it for embedding in an ePub.

There certainly is a variety of fonts that do allow this, though, and fonts like Linux Libertine or Volkorn offer some very handsome alternatives.

A few other fonts worth knowing about are:

The Vera family - highly functional, but not really very elegant:
Bitstream Vera
DejaVu - an enhanced version of Vera
Arev - Vera which has been expanded to cover an extremely wide Unicode range

Legendum and Garogier - possibly a bit too light for use on an eInk screen.

Junicode - designed for use in Old English and also a bit too light.

The URW font set - A very wide set of fonts that includes some favourites like Garamond. Unfortunately this is not licensed for commercial distribution, but as long as money isn't changing hands you can embed them in public domain ePubs.
