You don't *have to* buy from the Amazon bookstore either; you can buy from any bookstore with the appropriate format. I don't know why people think that you do.

I'm not interested in a touch screen.

When I was searching for a replacement for my Sony PRS-300 (I wanted a larger screen size), I looked at the Kindle and the Sony 650. I went with the Sony because of the quality of the build and because of the touch screen..I would never go back to the buttons

I know that you don't have to buy there, just have a look at my other posts, but it is convinient and people will buy there mostly, I guess. What I said in this post is: - you don't have to buy at Sonys store either - Kindle are cheaper than other devices - because they are subsidized - and the money comes from the books they sell - these books are sometimes substantially higher priced than at the sony store Please refrain to read what you like to read, but read what is written. In case you still have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask me. |

Is that because you have actually used one and didn't like it, or based on what you imagine using one would be like? If it's the former, then that's fine. I understand that not everyone likes using touch-screens. However, if it's the latter then I would encourage you to try one, before making up your mind. You might be pleasantly surprised by what you find.

To be honest I am usually not a big fan of touch-screens. I don't like it to see fingerprints on the display. Also I was shocked, when I saw the milky display of the Sony 600.
Before I purchased my Sony Reader PRS650, I considered the touch-screens as a disadvantage. It really changed my mind! It is so comfortable to just tap an a word you want to get the translation (especially if you are reading in a foreign language). The fingerprints are really not a big deal, they are not as visible as I thought and it is really easy to clean it. I really would miss it. |

I have a K1 and the buttons are still working fine, thanks for worrying about me though Jon!
I don't like the idea of a touchscreen e-reader. I can look up words very easily on my Kindle and I use the keyboard for taking notes. It is easy to open footnotes on the Kindle, use the D Pad, press the button, and it is done. It works great. I would not give up my 3G connectivity. You can't make me. Nope. Not gonna happen. |

I find the notion that the format or bookstore is most important when buying an e-reader a bit silly. All e-readers can easily be used independent of a specific bookstore. There are many bookstores out there that sell e-books without DRM and even more that sells books with DRM. Removing DRM is pretty simple.

Not to the general public ("Removing DRM is pretty simple"). I'd bet money a majority of Kindle buyers also buy exclusively from Amazon using their built-in sales channel. So the DRM issue and e-store robustness have implications that drive the future of our beloved reading devices.
As much of a Sony reader fan as I am, I will not be surprised if they discontinue their readers if their site's e-book sales fail to impress their management. And I suppose I am expecting that to happen. |

Please don't try and pin this on Amazon. Why do companies like BN, Kobo, and Sony persist with it? Sony changed formats around the time the K1 was released. Kobo and Nook came out after Amazon and choose a different format. Hardly Amazon's fault. DRM is driven by the Publishers. All of the various bookstores sell non-DRMed books. The books that are sold with DRM are sold that way because the author and/or publishers insist on it. |

I really don't know why you would presume that I was trying to pin something on Amazon, as you put it, or blame Amazon for DRM. As is frequently stated in MR forums, Amazon is the biggest bookseller with the widest choice. It is also well known that they sell e-books with DRM, therefore I assume they are the biggest seller of e-books with DRM. So, it seemed perfectly natural to me, to use them as an example, rather than attempt to list every single company that sells e-books with DRM. Last edited by boxcorner; 01-07-2011 at 02:00 PM. |

It is easy enough to say "all of the ebook stores" instead of "companies like Amazon". Heck "all of the ebook stores" even takes fewer letters, easier to type, and doesn't call out one of the book stores when they are all responsible. |

I loved my 505 and it's buttons. I love my 650 with the touchscreen. For me, as long as the unit displays my book to the standard of a pbook, (ie. no (appreciable) glare, no eye strain etc.) the interface is irrelevant. I don't take notes on the fly, I don't use dictionary lookup, at least I haven't yet) and I don't swipe to turn pages. The one thing I do enjoy about the touchscreen however, is the lack of wasted real estate necessary for a button interface.
