The more direct competition is the Galaxy Tab, which apparently sold 1 million units in the US in the last 2 months.

Also, due to major screwing the pooch with Nook availability last year -- and the need to have multiple units sitting in thousands of stores, rather than sitting in warehouses -- B&N needs to far outpace the expected demand. This is Riggio trying to assure people there won't be shortages this year.

As such, if you're going to measure its success, you have to wait and see how many actually sell as opposed to how many B&N ordered.

actually that's 1 million worldwide, stateside here the Galaxy Tab has a rather lukewarm reception at best, mostly because of the Phone carries price tag and contracts are too expensive.

Hence the Nook Color being a very very nice and attractive alternative to the android crowd.

I don't know about that but it sure would good to make sure there is another viable player in the ereader game. If the kindle has a death grip on the ereader market the way the ipod had/has on the mp3 market, nobody benefits, not even kindle consumers. My guess is no.

So while I don't think the kindle is in any trouble, I do think the nook is going to be a stronger player then they have hoped for.

Actually, the Samsung Galaxy Tab was slated for 1 million by year-end and has revised that to 1.5 million. You'll also discover a severe shortage of the things -- it is definitely a hit in all markets, including the US.

The Galaxy Tab and NookColor are two different classes of devices and the price tag -- $600 vs $250 -- reflects it. How well the Tab does in 2011 when other devices start to filter to market -- including an Android 3.0 device from LG -- is anyone's guess. But for the time being, make no mistake: they are selling every single one they can make.

No shortage of Galaxy Tabs in the Atlanta Metro area. I see them in stock all over the place. If they'd get the WiFi only version out I'd consider it but I will not buy one that requires a data plan.
