				Websites seized/closed for Copyright

I'm surprised this isn't all over the forum: The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency picked the busiest online shopping day of the year to shut down 82 websites -- including the domain of a BitTorrent meta-search engine -- the federal government said are offering counterfeit or pirated goods. http://www.informationweek.com/news/...SSfeed_IWK_All http://www.dmwmedia.com/news/2010/11...counterfeiting http://www.pcworld.com/businesscente...iolations.html |

There is a list of sites here: http://torrentfreak.com/u-s-governme...d-more-101126/ Most of them seem to be sellers of fake (real) merchandise rather than unauthorised downloads. This one made me smile: http://torrentfreak.com/anti-piracy-...ortion-101129/ |

What in the world does ICE have any business closing websites for copyright issues? Is that in their area of operation? We sure know they aren't doing their primary job of immigration...maybe this is what they've been up to all these years.

The Department of Vaterland Security has been around a lot longer than two years. So has the "Patriot" Act. Whatever things President Obama deserves the blame for, this isn't one of them. It started long before him. It started when we decided "safety" (as defined by someone else, of course) is worth any amount of liberty. It started earlier, when people said "If you don't have anything to hide, what are you afraid of?" It started before that, when we decided to outsource our opinions to the law ("I don't like it, but there's no law against it, so I can't say anything"). It started even before that, when we became "consumers" instead of citizens, defined by what we buy instead of what we do. |

I see no controversy in shutting down sites that violate copyright.

It's probably not appropriate to say openly, but I'm fine with copyright infringement so long as the person or organization you are infringing upon is a complete jerk. And, because I can foresee the question now: I decide, by my own standards, who is a jerk, and you decide, by your own standards, who is a jerk.

All this action will do is just increase paranoia. Sounds like all they wanted to do is be associated with the sales season. Next year don't plan on shopping from a no-name website: it might get seized without notice. All this will accomplish is to get small online shops on their way to bankruptcy. The real crooks can find their way out of this mess. |
