If you really want to change it, it's fairly simple, at least under Windows. You just delete the existing Kobo driver(s) in Device Manager, and then Windows will pick it up fresh when you next plug the reader in.

To anyone about to ask how to go about that - don't. If you're not familiar enough with your system to understand what to do from the shorthand, it's probably best to leave things be. No insult intended; I just don't want to be responsible for anyone messing something up...and for those who don't know, I had surgery yesterday and thus consider myself incapable of giving detailed information on such a subject for at least the next week. Especially from memory.
What I wanted to know was if anyone else was seeing the 3.4.1 string for a 3.5.0 device or if I was having an issue with my computer. I'm quite willing and able to do a search and destroy in device manager but didn't want to bother if others were seeing the same. I knew it was not a consistent issue since my wife's Aura was detected as a 3.5.0 device.

So given the information posted by others suggested I should be seeing a 3.5.0 device, I used USBdeview to remove all the Kobo devices from the disconnected USB device list, reconnected the Aura and after the driver install, it showed up as a 3.5.0 device, connected my Aura HD and it showed up as a 3.4.1 device.

Tried the show non-present devices set for device manager, enabled show hidden in device manager and removed all the Kobo related entries including volumes, usb mass storage devices, etc. Reconnected my Aura HD and finally it showed up as a 3.5.0 device.

Victory is mine! Mmwahahaha...

David

Hmmm... minor nit. Chinese standard is to short D+ to D-. The European standard which came a bit later was to connect a 200 ohm resistor from D+ to D-. Apple's standard was to use a two pairs of resistive voltage dividers to hold D+ at +2.8V and D- at +2.0V for high current charging and both D+ and D- at +2.0V for low current charging. I ran into this with an old USB car charger that would not charge an iPhone 3 with the infamous charging is not supported with this accessory message.

Then we get into the mysteries of USB 3.0 charging...

When I have seen it, I have checked the epub. The epub was well constructed. The chapter files were small (less than 100KB each). Looking at the code of the book, there is never a reason for this to happen.

I don't see it as much as others seem to. But, I see it enough to know it happens and have not been able to come up with a useful pattern.
I didn't say that it is the case with kobo, it was the case with sony, if it is or isn't the cause I can't see, I do can see that a lot of ebooks that are displayed wrong on the Aura HD are wrong because of the building of the epub itself and not because the Aura HD or the firmware handles it wrong.
I did seen some mistakes on the Aura, that didn't come back when deleted and transferred the identical epub back.. so I think this is the famous needle...

Finally decided to sideload the update instead of waiting for Kobo to roll it out to me. I mean it's only been nearly a month. Thanks to all involved that make it available on the forum.

I've been using the same charger for a while now, so if it is charger wiring related, something changed on 3.5.0 (or a fairly recent version).

You're not alone, as of 6:00 tonight I still have not received the 3.5 update. At 30 days since it was rolled out this is the slowest, the previous updates came in the 18-21 day range for me. I'm not that desperate for it to sideload it, it just seems to me that the rollout has slowed.

...But some devices like my old sony and my Aura HD detects when the adaptor can give more and then ask: is this a computer or do you only want to use the charging....
/QUOTE]
i don't think that bit is quite correct. I have a an amazon fast charge adaptor & cable that they sell for silly money ( but which came free with my HDX tablet). When I plug my aura HD into that it just charges - there's no is this a computer issue. & that's on FW 3.3

Conversely, if I plug my Kindle HDX into the Kobo branded adaptor+hard wired cable that came with my Kobo Arc tablet - the Kindle warns - you are using a (crap) slow charger - even though the output rating printed on the kobo charger (5v 2 amp) is higher what amazon advertise! The kobo charger must have one of the optional charging wires disabled I guess.

I have sideloaded 3.5.0 on my Aura HD. The 3.3.0 bug that made the games and the web browser unusable because of continuous screen refreshes hasnt been fixed despite Kobo Support telling me "it will be fixed in the next version". So back to 3.2.0 again.

That's weird, because it seems that the consensus here is that it had been fixed with 3.5. Many have reported so, and I personally don't see the continuous flashing anymore...

(I side-load epubs with calibre. I check all books with Calibre and Sigil for errors before side-loading them).

I have experienced the 1% light bug.

The minimum slider line spacing leaves huge gaps between lines (epub).

After side-loading a epub then invoking the TOC it does a software reset of its own accord, it's ok after the reset, seems to occur more with books that have nested TOC's.

English-French menu in the Dictionary Pip screen will not go away, it was never checked to be loaded before or after (manual) upgrade, so I don't know why the thing is there at all.
I have two English dictionaries installed, the kobo default and the websters which I've titled as "-de" to have it display in the dictionary pip screen.

i have been lurking on this thread & wondering whether to turn my aura hd wi-fi on to allow an update, but I am confused as to whether 3.5 is still rolling out or has been pulled?
is there still no official word on that ?. I am on 3.3 & I have no issues with that, except the occasional long paragraph bug.

At this time, 3.5.0 seems to still be rolling out but at rate best described as glacial.

If the line spacing slider is having an effect, it suggest that some of your epubs do not specify a fixed line height. To check this using Calibre, select edit for an epub and then enable Live CSS view. Select a tag and that panel will show the styles affecting the tag and the cumulative effect.

You might also want to check the line patch in the Patching Firmware thread in the Kobo Developer's Corner https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=238175 for information on changing the line spacings used by the slider.

thanks - is there any quick way to assimilate 9+ pages of contradictory advice on whether to allow the upgrade, or not ?

maybe there should be a voting poll or is it too late to suggest that.

And is there already, or should there, be a sticky on how to roll back to a previous version - with links as needed - for those who upgrade & then wish they hadn't. I could maybe figure that out, but one has to be careful to get the correct firmware for their specific device ?. i

I did a factory reset on my Aura running 3.5.0 at the weekend, and when I used the "setup via wifi" method the Aura actually went and "upgraded" itself to 3.3.0!

Has the firmware been withdrawn? I did later go and sideload the 3.5.0 firmware via the direct links thread so the firmware files are still available.

I don't understand Kobo.
