It's the renderer used for Kobo's own epub flavor kepub.
It's the format used when you download Kobo books through the desktop program or by syncing the device.

And anticipating your next question, forster01, the best and easiest way to use kepubs and its dedicated renderer from your existing library of epubs is through Calibre KoboTouch Extended plug-in which replaces the default KoboTouch driver. Look for it in the Calibre plugin section of these forums.

Inside it enable an option called "Enable advanced Kobo features" or something like that. In this way when you transfer any epub from your library to the device using Calibre it will be automatically converted to kepub on the fly, while the epub on your HDD will be left untouched.

Give it a try. You can easily return to common epubs if you don't like how ACCESS differs from RMSDK.

Of course, books bought from Kobo bookstore are usually downloaded to the device or the desktop software in kepub flavour (and using its own DRM protection scheme different from the commonly used in epubs: Adobe's ADEPT).

Only one extra caution: your epubs must be DRM free or the Extended driver won't be able to convert them. So if you have ADEPT DRM protected epubs you should previously look for the help of an Apprentice called Alf in Google in order to unDRM them. No further help about unDRMing is allowed in these forums.

Small correction: Not all kepubs have DRM. I recently purchased a Tor novel that could only be downloaded as a kepub, but it was still DRM-free.

You will also have to disable the standard Kobo Touch driver, and, if you are using any plugboards to rename content, update them to use device KOBOTOUCHEXTENDED instead of KOBOTOUCH.

The CSS Level 3 Fragmentation module states the following (which I've quoted once before):

Only positive integers are allowed as values of ‘orphans’ and ‘widows’. Negative values and zero are invalid and must cause the declaration to be ignored.

Please note the section that I have bolded. And yes, testing with a ePub3/CSS 3 compliant application, setting widows and orphans to 0 gave the same effect as no widows and orphans declarations, i.e. the default of 2 was applied.

David
But, that's not for ePub 2. That's for ePub 3 and what I'm editing is an ePub 2 eBook, not an ePub 3 eBook.

Marvin and iBooks do work with Widows and orphans with a value of 0.

CSS Level 3 is not necessarily for ePub 3 only. An ePub 2 ebook used with a CSS 3 aware renderer can make use of some CSS 3 constructs. You might note that iBooks supports such CSS 3 items as animations but then iBooks has never been noted for following standards correctly -- take a look at such items as it's handling of width tags in a img element.

CSS Level 2 uses the same positive integer requirement for widows/orphans. What it does not spell out is what is to be done when an invalid value is detected.

So best practice, in my not so humble opinion, would be to use a value of 1 which will continue working in the future and not 0 which is non-standard and might not work the way you expect in the future.

Regards,
David

It's a bug fixed in Datalogic's 30 May 2014 version of the RMSDK: http://kb.datalogics.com/articles/FA...-by-Datalogics. I guess we just have to hope Kobo will update to an even more recent version of RMSDK 10.

The files in /usr/share/hyphen/ are just (dangling) symbolic links, the files they point to in /usr/local/Kobo/hyphenDicts really are missing:
Code:
lrwxrwxrwx root/wheel        0 2014-07-10 04:25 ./usr/share/hyphen/hyph_en_US.dic -> /usr/local/Kobo/hyphenDicts/hyph_en.dic

I looked at the directory, but didn't actually look at the files.

Been following this widows/orphans discussion. Whenever I convert an epub I always put in this

p, body{
widows: 0;
orphans: 0;
}

at the tab Extra CSS in the Look and Feel section. Somebody advised this somewhere sometime. So should I change the 0's to 1's?
