It’s not mandatory to have it, but you might have to run the hotfix if you ever want to update your Kindle to a more recent firmware version. To get the “run hotfix” booklet back in your library, you can just re-install the “Update_hotfix_universal.bin” file like you did as part of the jailbreak.

Thanks for the help, I don't see myself ever needing to upgrade the firmware but good to know. Seems like I've not caused any permanent damage as I had expected thankfully!

Thanks for this amazing work.
Works flawlessly with 10th generation kindle, firmware 5.17.1.0.3.
My kindle is finally free. Koreader works too.

Just successfully completed the first step of jailbreaking! Paperwhite Signature Edition 11 PW5 5.17.1.0.3

I struggled for the longest time to get mesquito to show up instead of the kindle store. I read every page of this thread, followed the advice on the kindle modding site, factory reset at least 10 times. I can't remember where I read the advice, but someone suggested that they go theirs to work because their wifi was going in and out. I decided to switch the connection to my mobile hotspot and instead of putting my kindle on airplane mode, I just turned the hotspot off. Then, I attempted to load the kindle store a few times. It would tell me I'm not connected to wifi and ask me to click one, I'd close out of that page and click the store icon again. I did that a few times, then when I turned my hotspot back on and went into the store, mesquito loaded!

Here's hoping the other steps don't give me as much trouble.

Worked on my Scribe on latest update 5.17.2. Installed KOReader, blocked OTA and logging. Backed up the few books I had from Amazon and deleted everything from my content library. Now I can go back to using native epub and cbz without converting to kindle formats.

How could I support this project and those involved?

Thanks to everyone who made this happen!

Latest on the Scribe is 5.17.3. You can install the update and regain access to the jailbreak, but I'd advise turning OTA updates back on first so you have a way to recover if something does go sideways.

Maybe one last thing, you say “All the files from the WinterBreak.tar.gz were extracted to the internal storage folder of my kindle.” Are you extracting the files directly to the Kindle storage, or first in a directory on your computer, which you then copy over to the Kindle storage? Because extracting directly to the Kindle storage is not normally supported by MTP, so that might be the issue.

Basically if you really see all the files in your Kindle storage (except the Trash folder if you’re not on a Mac) as per the attached image (stolen from the kindlemodding site), then I really don’t have any other idea of what could be going wrong.
Sorry, yes, I extracted the compressed folder to a regular folder, THEN copied to my kindle storage. I have all the files as shown in the image you attached, minus the trash folder.

I have been trying to jailbreak my Kindle Basic 10th Generation with firmware 5.17.1.03, I keep getting the "unexpected error" in the kindle store no matter what I do. I have followed the troubleshoot guide. I also tried the advice to scroll through the kindle store.

Does anyone have anything else I could try? Thanks!

after reading a nice news I've ordered the new kindle right a way (pw 12 gen), but for some reason this jb does not work for me.

After copying over files from extracted directory to the kindle (tried on win and mac os) and doing restart with air mode on, nothing happens. I do not see any other books/links to start the jail brake and menu looks the same as it was before.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

UPD: started to work, seems like step by step instructions needs some updates.
After restart Kindle (12gen and 7 gen) did not ask to disable airplane mode so I tab on something like look for your book online then I got that pop up and after enabling it started to work

Edit: You can also check this page on kindlemodding.org: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaki...m-a-reset.html
All the steps I went through seems to just keep KUAL and related items intact without resetting the device back to original. I went ahead and placed a blank file named DO_FACTORY_RESTORE in the Kindle's root directory and restarted. It did its thing and appears to have factory reset (or restored) the device. I went back through the sign-in and registration process.

KFT was still lingering around in the Settings menu. I understand it's just an artifact of the jailbreak process, but I'm looking for an "out of box" configuration on the device, so I decided to Factory Reset from Settings.

Went back through the sign-in and registration process and KFT is still in the Settings menu

I was able to successfully jailbreak, install KUAL and disable OTA... but stuck at KOReader installation. I used the koreader-kindle-legacy-v2024.11.zip from the GitHub... when I launch it from KUAL it just blanks I just copy the folders to root right?

KUAL and Run Hotfix are there and run fine. I'm on a Kindle PW4 (10th gen).
