Hi to all,
My PB 840 Inkpad just suffered a cracked substrate and is "down for the count"! I have no idea what I may have inadvertently done to cause the crack or whatever else may have caused it. I have been offered a 20% discount from PB for a new unit as there is no USA repair facility. My question is as follows: Can I get a brief review of the i86 ML in reference to utilizing it only for e-reading purposes including the fact that I sideload the vast majority of my books. I use the Prestigio ereader on both my tablet and smartphone along with occasionally using the Kindle ap. While I hesitate to spend the $279.00 required for the i86, I also hesitate to invest an additional $172.00 for a second 840 not knowing what caused the substrate to crack. I simply want an 8 inch screen on a unit that will produce a reasonably trouble free and positive reading experience. Also any problems with substrate cracking? Thanks in advance for a limited use review of the i86 ML. |

Anyway, what exactly would you like to know ? 1. ePub experience - The i86 comes with four default apps; Onyx Reader, Onyx Neo Reader, Oreader (AlReader) and FBreader. Of course, since the i86 is an android tablet, you can install mostly any app you like. Here is a comparison video between the i86 and the the PB 840 in how both handle ePubs. 2. PDF/DJVU experience - Again, there are two dedicated readers that have all sort of options from cropping, zooming, text reflow to making everything bolder. I have found that Orion Viewer works very well on the i86 and here is a video which I made that shows that. 3. Frontlight - Those that purchased the device several months before me were unhappy with the uniformity of the frontlight. Some say that the frontlight on the PB 840 is better than the one of the i86. I got my device my a couple of weeks ago and all I can say is that the frontlight serves its purpose well without distraction. 4. Dictionary Support - If regularly check the meaning of words or you need to constantly translate, then you're going to have a tough time with the i86. All the default reading apps are hard wired to use Onyx Dict which is some form of Stardict. Needless to say much, it is horrible ! However, you can install any other dictionary app, but you'll still be unable to use it within any of the default reading apps. So, you'll have to install something like Moon Reader or CoolReader. 5. Build Quality - I think the PB 840 looks much nicer than the i86. I also considered buying the PB 840 but decided against it as page turning appeared to be painfully slow and the appeal of open android on the i86 was too much to overcome. So, make up your mind !! Let me reclarify what I thought was clear.
Is the i86 worth an additional $100. (approx.) over the replacement cost for the 840 if my usage is limited to its capabilities as an ereader for ePub and Mobi books? Yes, I had looked at the items mentioned by Medwatt so I had done my "due diligence" and was simply looking for users reviews focused on my personal usage limitations above. PS: have decided to go the replacement route for my damaged Pocketbook 840 rather than getting the i86. Thanks for the help. Last edited by p38lightning; 11-07-2015 at 02:45 PM. Reason: Update |

A couple of things that needs to be sorted out.
I just got my onyx boox i86 a couple of days ago and I like it a lot, but there are some things I think would be good to adress.
![]() Q1: Refresh. Using stock Oreader. I set the setting to always refresh. I change the boldness of to 1. and the text looks good. when I change the page the text get thinner and with more rugged contures. It seems that i86 does not refresh. Is there a manual way to refresh the pages or other workaround? It can be best seen with small text. Q2: TTS I promptly rooted using this method to install IVONA tts with voice Amy (I recommend this voice) on it. TTS was the biggest reason why I bought it compared to pocket book inkpad. Stock Oreder has tts but it pauses a very long time between sentences and I can't make it start anywhere I like on the page. It just starts from the top of the page and sometimes it hangs as well. is there a workaround or is there an other good pdf viewer with good tts and dictionary support for this device? Q3: Dictionary How can I get rid of the Chinese in the dictionary answers? I moved the Chinese dictionary folder from the dictionary directory but I still get the Chinese explanations. I use Oxford dictionary online (paid service). It has more words and explanations than the oxford in my i86. Does anyone have a suggestion of a more comprehensive dictionary for the i86. I don't need translation but if you have a suggestion for Eng-Swe dictionary I'm all ears. Q4:Programs in the background. How do switch between programs in the background and fore ground. I saw this video but I don't know how he manages it. Last edited by poppe; 11-08-2015 at 09:54 AM. |

It was not about the Ivona. In a review the inkpad did crash immediately when trying tts a pdf file, it did not come further than the first line. I will use the reader mainly on pdf:s. So I thought since android has much more applications I thought that I would find a reader that does not crash. But I have still not found an app that works 100% So I'm open for suggestions. So Q2 still open. ![]() @medwatt Thanks!! ![]() Last edited by poppe; 11-08-2015 at 02:52 PM. |

P.S. PDF is more concerned with how a document is displayed than anything else. Even though you see standard text being displayed, it does not mean that there is standard text within the document. The text may be in an image, or the characters may be drawn using individual painting instructions (so that the document doesn't know that it is text being drawn), or the individual characters in a word can be placed individually for better kerning (thus breaking the words into little parts), or the words can be placed in the correct positions but in non-sequential order, or ... Any of these will break TTS. I tested the PDF User Manual that comes with the Inkpad, and the TTS worked okay on it. I also tested my old graduate scientific theses, and TTS was horrible on it. It seemed to run into all of the problems I mentioned above. Last edited by rkomar; 11-08-2015 at 03:48 PM. |
