A larger screen will make it easier to crack the substrate.

I may "whine" about the last 2 F/W versions which made it impossible for me to access full page or research for my French dictionaries (I'm French, bought my kobos in France, and consider that outrageous customer service), but I appreciate that kobo keeps improving its firmware and makes it available for older devices. Sony never did: if something didn't work and they knew how to improve it (I'm speaking F/W, not hardware), they kept it for their latest model to improve sales - with the result that they discontinued their readers line. Globally my "reading experience" has improved by leaps and bounds with every new model (except for the aura 6" with it's capacitive yellowish fuzzy gridded layer) and most F/W releases. Many people consult me about which reader to buy, and though I dislike the Kindle closed system, I do recommend Kindle for people with no computer savvy and no one close willing and able to manage their reader. Otherwise, I recommend kobos, the glo hd or aura h2o these days. EDIT: I wrote kobo by mistake, it was my sonys whose quality was too poor for me. I have astigmatism, vitreous detachment on both eyes (I'm not sure about the translation from the French), and my eyes tire easily. So the less than stellar quality of the sonys made my eyes tire more. And since I read a minimum of five hours every day, mostly at night, anytime a new improved device comes out, with better light, crisper characters, I buy it. I had intended to use the glo HD on the go, and keep reading on the h2o at home, especially for poetry (the increased width is a plus), but the glo HD quality is, for my eyes (not everybody sees it from what I read on the forum), better enough that I can read as comfortably with a smaller font, which compensates. Plus the smaller size and lighter weight make it definitely more comfortable to hold hours on end for my small very arthritic hands. I like the size and width / height ratio of the aura h2o though, and if there was a new one with at least the same quality as the glo hd, and if possible under 200g I'd probably buy it. The Kobo H2O is generally regarded to be the best option if you want a slightly larger screen. Along with the Kindle Voyage it has the best screen (Carta) combined with highest resolution, and good quality inbuilt light, those are the two 'premium' offerings. The Glo HD is a cheaper option and worth trying if you are happier with the standard 6" screen and still great quality screen/resolution just in a cheaper package.
Some people love their Sony T1/2/3 but they don't have as high resolution and carta screen (which are the two things that make the Glo HD & H2O better to read on. They also don't have an inbuilt front light (though not everyone loves this feature and is why they stick with their old Sony), and in addition to all of that, they are no longer supported by Sony. Whatever you buy to replace your Aura HD, make sure you invest in case for it, and don't leave it in your car overnight. ![]() |

I'm to sad and disappointed to be honest to buy something else... I was just looking at other brands... I'm gonna wait until non-breakable e-ink devices come on the market.
the 6 inch is just to little for pdf's and besides that Kindle offers no epub support and less features. so... I'm a bit stucked right now. Only escape is for Kobo higher ups to whom my complaint was forwarded to offer me a discount (since they wont replace the screen even on my expense) for another 6.8'' device (this is a minimum for pdf in my opinion)... in whatever case, I wont take it out from my room, no matter what... at least not until plastic replaces glass... Later edit: though I left it in the car, it was in a cover, but I think on the Aura HD, even if its HD, they've put cheap parts, at least compared to the 6'' Aura. Its not HQ - high quality, it's HD - high definition (of the screen). Now, what use I have now for a HD? But I could've had for a HQ ![]() check this: "Mark 4 Hardware: Aura HD/Glo and TouchLC (Low Cost -N905C Model)." This IS what it is, a LOW cost model. from http://www.mobileread.mobi/forums/sh...d.php?t=185660 . even though the glass substrate is thin in eink screen technology, from what it happened to me and to others, I definetely can say that my Aura HD was much more sensible since a bit of temperature difference, not a higher one, cracked the screen. This is not a frustrated owner's conclusion but what I could put together from forums. It happened to other but with much bigger temp diff. Last edited by mihail_bc; 08-15-2015 at 09:17 AM. |
