I have had my e-book for a year and all was fine until I instaled Norton's 360. I have been locked out ever since but able to get through from the web not using shortcuts and I disabled all 360....don't like this plan for the future so I was looking at other sites that sell eboks and there are many.

It used to work so well and I'd love to find the answer that doesnt put my machine at risk....banking etc works so why not Sony??

Is it possible that it is Microsoft...do they have an ereader that is competitive?

Would appreciate any insight.

Someone should add this to the Wiki. As a matter of fact, it would be nice to have a whole page on the Sony eLibrary software. I don't think there is one now.

I will put it on my list... but if anyone else wants to get started with it, feel free.

It would be interesting to know if you use Vista. Both my husband and I have the same e-book,and Norton's 360. He has NO PROBLEMS and I have XP and need to turn off the network proxy or I would be fresh out of luck.

I think if you upgraded to Vista perhaps the problem would be solved????

I don't have norton or symantec - I use trend micro. I just bought my first book from the sony store and can't move it to the reader because I get the message unable to access ebook store. Of course, I was able to access it to make the purchase - but not to transfer the book. I transferred it with Calibre but it won't open because it says it's protected. This is very frustrating...to the point that I won't be buying from Sony anymore. I am using Vista.

Any ideas?

When is it not allowing to transfer? After you made the purchase, did it download to your library? Or is it not letting you put it on the device?

I use Trend Micro - the eBook Store worked OK for months, occasionally losing a connection, then starting 2 days ago stopped - to get around it I have to reboot, then turn off all security, then access the eBook Store - I can then turn on security and keep Store access.

I presume Trend Micro updated something that closed a security "hole" - Pain in the you know what.

I don't know the Trend Micro equivalent to the Norton instructions previously given in this forum thread.

Sony E-book problems

Both my husband and I have a Sony 505 and have used it for over a year now

He has no problem at all accessing The Store and he has Norton 360 but he uses AOL and has VISTA.

I on the other hand cannot access The Store (easily) and have Norton 360 but use a regularily update Explorer.

I'm sure that should I use Vista I wouldn't have these problems. I don't intend to change to Vista either.

i don't think you need to upgrade to Vista. just keep this in mind.. if the EBL is working in another computer so it means that the software works fine.. now something in this computer is not allowing you to go in... try this.

check with norton... they said is a problem with the EBL by sony but they fix the problem.. if you turn off the Network Proxy, that will work for a couple days... Norton will upgrade the software automatically and you need to go and STOP the Network Proxy again. hope it helps.

Hello I am a noobie and I just got my sony yesterday. I found this forum because I have the same problem with sony connect and I was getting same messages. I am on Windows XP and have avast and zone alarm firewall. After finding out from you guys that it is an anti-virus problem, I just exited off the sony reader software and website, then turned off both firewall and and avast. I restarted the reader software after that then I was able to authorize my computer and reader. Then it transferred easily after that. Then I turned back firewall and anti-virus on.

Not sure though if I will use that service again if I would need to keep turning my firewalls on and off...

Thanks guys.

Thumbs up Here is how I got access to the ebookstore

I have Norton 2008 running on Windows XP. In addition to "Home" and "Internet Security" Norton has a tab called something like "Add On Pack". After trying many things from suggestions in many postings what worked was to remove the Add On Pack. (Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Norton Add On Pack). I never used it anyway and I don't think most people do or would.
One other thing that might have had some impact was making rules for access in Norton Personal Firewall:Program Control for ebook library exec and ebook library launcher exec, although it is possible Norton might have set those up OK. I just messed around so much it is possible the rules were already OK.
Along the road I tried taking ebook out of DEP to no effect. Disabling Norton Firewall never helped. I had some Adware and Spyware monitor/removal programs that I turned off and that didn't help. Turning off Peerguardian(relates to P2P access) didn't help.
My biggest clues were that somewhere in all the research I did someone had mentioned the add on pack. I was pretty sure it was the problem when I booted into SafeMode with internet access and the Ebookstore connection worked! (Norton does not come up in safe mode).
I still get connection problems but it is obvious the cause is the Sony site. I just try again and it works. Good luck.

I had a similar problem with my 300 and was able to solve it as so:

(Win XP)

Start - Settings - Control Panel - Internet Options.
Click 'Connections' Tab.
Click 'Lan Settings'.
Uncheck 'Use a proxy server for you LAN'.

All worked well after this.

Hope this helps someone!
