Things are a little complicated, since some points work differently on different models. I therefore try to summarize the expected behaviour of the files exit_nickel.png and switchtokoreader.png when opened from nickel. If nickel was called by "start nickel"
If nickel was called by "koreader_additions > start nickel koreader switch" or "koreader_additions > start koreader nickel switch"

Actually, the association is newly established each time one selects "start nickel." Therefore, reinstalling KoboRoot.tgz should not be necessary.
Before associating an image file with an action, the script checks whether the image is already registered in the database, and refuses to establish the association if the image file is not registered (to be completley on the save side, the script should also check whether the respective thumb nail has already been created, but I skipped this part and trusted that the user will take care that the thumb nail is produced by looking at it in the library list). But sometimes reinstalling works wonders! So who knows? |

many thanks for your speedy replies. It seems that Ken got it right. I re-installed KoboRoot.tgz from the KSM download, and now everything seems to work as intended. Maybe something had gone wrong during the installation of the Koreader nightly. ![]() Thanks again, Eriol Last edited by Eriol Brumel; 12-13-2014 at 06:34 PM. |

Does the Kobo Start Menu prevent factory resets (thrice reset as described in http://www.kobo.com/help/en-US/artic...o%20Aura%20H2O )? It seems to replace the central bootup script (rcS) and things like (/usr/local/Kobo/pickel should-factory-reset) seem to be missing from the Kobo Start Menu version of it.

With KSM, instead of inserting a paper clip three times in a row after booting, one would insert a sd card with autorun.sh containing the factory reset code once. This is the idea, but I did not actually try it myself. Last edited by tshering; 12-14-2014 at 08:01 AM. |

Oh, I see.
I was wondering how it detected the triple reset, it seems the should-factory-reset does something to the first 512 bytes of the vfat partition... in particular one byte is changed to 00 -> 01 -> 02 -> 03 -> 04 -> 05 (and there it exits with 1) -> 00 -> ... with subsequent calls, so that does look like a counter of sorts. I guess if nickel starts successfully, that would be reset somehow. Not sure if the autostart.sh method would help this guy: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=252810 (bricked H2O, in another thread he stated he had KSM installed) Then again it bricked during firmware upgrade, which would likely have removed KSM anyhow. Edit: you mean autoscript.sh? Last edited by frostschutz; 12-14-2014 at 08:55 AM. |

No, it is autoscript.sh. I choose this more uncommon name to prevent that an autorun.sh that might be there by chance will be run. Last edited by tshering; 12-14-2014 at 09:21 AM. |

I realised today, that signing out clears all the .kobo folder. This way I updated to 3.12.0, and KSM works just fine on the Aura HD.
But one note: I added the fix to be able to do a proper partial update, but today exit nickel turned off the light with no reboot. (After the above reinstall, I have not added the fix having no newer firmware than 3.12, and exit nickel worked as intended, with reboot.) Can a change in the scripts cause such behaviour? |

Sorry, I think I do not understand exactly the sequence of events in your description, but I think what happened is something like this: When starting nickel, KSM checks whether exit_nickel.png is registered in the database, and only if it is registered, then it associates a certain action with it (in the case of Aura HD and H2O the action of rebooting). In your case the database was cleared, because you signed out, and only after nickel was started exit_nickel.png was again registered. Therefore, exit_nickel.png was not associated with any action, but behaved like any book. However, why the light was switched off, I do not understand. Excuse me, during writing the above I had to quickly prepare a photobook, so I parallelly did 2-3 things.
Before anything went wrong, I copied the bugfix, overwriting the original scripts. Then I started nickel, copied some new books, and after that somehow exit nickel seemed to exit nickel, but it was not followed by a reboot. (It is indeed strange, as earlier it worked.) |

activate dictionaries
This is only for KSM version 06!
Purpose: activate side loaded dictionaries. After installation, go to "tools > activate > activate dictionaries msh" As for the illustrating images, you will notice that I overdid the "modifications for bad eyes" quite a bit. This has nothing to do with KSM. The first image shows the "activate dictionaries msh" screen, the second image shows the report that was shown after I executed "activate all." Since this will make changes to the database, you might consider backing up .kobo\KoboReader.sqlite, before trying this. EDIT: I removed the archive here, and included the content in KBStartMenu_06_update01b.zip, which you can find here. Last edited by tshering; 12-22-2014 at 06:43 PM. |

Hi,
I tried to install KSM and Koreader, and it looks great. Unfortunately, I can't start nickel anymore : every time I launch it, it reboots the reader. So my question is, how do I uninstall all this? I think I'll give another try later. Thanks. EDIT : Already found the solution : I may keep it for a while after all, but it could be great to know how to uninstall anyway.
