I installed pbchess first, followed by KSM. It works fine for me.

PS. Your English is better than my German!

I posted a bugfix (KBStartMenu_06_bugfix_01.zip; this is replaced now by KBStartMenu_06_update01b.zip) here. Please copy/merge the content of the archive to/with .kobo\kbmenu. This replaces the files .kobo\kbmenu\onstart\ksmhome.sh and .kobo\kbmenu\helpers\unzipFw.msh.

The package fixes
  • an error in "handle update > install partial update". A typo in the script prevented that KSM survives an Kobo FW update. (If this already happened to you, copy KoboRoot.tgz of reinstall_KSM_06.zip, which you can find here to .kobo in order to revive KSM)
  • an error in the script that helps you extract Kobo FW packages to .kobo

How to update the Kobo FW via Wifi by KSM (if nickel does not do it for you)

(You can achieve this of course also by changing the affiliate.)

Apply KBStartMenu_06_bugfix_01.zip (conf. previous post)

For devices the FW is meant for (Glo, Aura, Aura HD, Aura H2O)
  • enable wifi
  • select "tools > checkbattery.sh" to see whether the battery is sufficently charged
  • select "tools > Kobo FW update.msh > download FW.sh" (after a while the download will start; during the download you will see the update animation)
  • select "unzip FW to kobo.msh > mark4 3.12.0.zip > extract" (you will see the update animation while the content is being extracted)
  • select "handle update > install partial update" (while the device is updating, you will see the update animation)

For devices the FW is not meant for
  • enable wifi
  • select "tools > checkbattery.sh" to see whether the battery is sufficently charged
  • select "tools > Kobo FW update.msh > extra > download recent FW mark4.sh" (after a while the download will start, during the download you will see the update animation)
  • select "tools > Kobo FW update.msh > unzip FW to kobo.msh > mark4 3.12.0.zip > extract only root tgz" (you will see the update animation while the content is being extracted))
  • select "handle update > install partial update" (while the device is updating, you will see the update animation)

I tested this on Touch (C-model) and Glo.

As always, do this on your own risk!

Does the new "handle update" function means that I am now able to delay or skip a firmware update?

Yes, this has been so since the first version of the kobo start menu. But it is only useful to delay a firmware update for some time, since the Kobo server will refuse to synchronize a device that it is not updated (This however does not concern synchronizing Pocket content.) And if you do not synchronize anyway there is no danger of getting an unwanted update.

If you want to refuse to update and still be able to synchronize with the Kobo serer, have a look a GeoffR's Instructions for patching firmware XXX. GeoffR provides a patch that tricks the server to believe the device does not need an update.

The main purpose of the handle update option is that you can install a firmware update and keep KSM installed at the same time (by choosing: "install partial update").

This is very interesting, does it work also if I go to nickel at some point and download the fw while in nickel?

Another unrelated question: what does exactly the "start koreader nickel switch" and "start nickel koreader switch" items do? Don't I always start with KSM and choose reader from there?

Yes, when the download is finished nickel will trigger a reboot. After the reboot, KSM will present the option "handle update." (Do not miss to apply KBStartMenu_06_bugfix_01.zip, which you can find here, before you try this)

If you select "start nickel koreader switch", nickel will be launched. From nickel you can than call exit_nickel.png in order to return to KSM (as usual), or you can call switchtokoreader.png in order to exit nickel and launch directly koreader. If you then exit koreader, nickel will be launched and so on.

If you select "start koreader nickel switch", the same thing is happening, but starting first with koreader.
This works with Touch, Mini, Glo. I think it works with Aura. I do not think it works with Aura HD and H2O.

Ok, so this is more a one time operation than a stable setting, right?
Not clear in the "start koreader" case how you go to KSM (hitting the home icon launchs nickel), anyway.

This is correct!

This is not how it should be.
I guess you have an advboot folder in .kobo. The script .kobo\koreader\koreader.sh does not handle this case reliably. Please replace this script by the one I upload here and try.

Edit: It seems I gave an answer to another question than the one you asked. You say that you get from koreader to nickel? I have no idea how this can happen. Are you using the latest koreader version? And the latest KSM version (06)?
The script below should nonetheless be useful (but for another case).

Edit 2: After thinking it over again: Is it possible that your device reboots - because of the advboot folder -, and KSM automatically starts nickel. This happens if there is no user input for about 20 seconds after booting.

I get from Koreader to nickel touching the home icon if I go to koreader trough the "start koreader nickel switch" command.
No advboot folder in .kobo, and latest version of KSM and Koreader.
Thank you for your answer but I don't mind since I don't see any vantage in using that function. If I can be of help I can test it anyway.

I did not realise that by "start koreader" you meant "start koreader nickel switch." Now I can answer your original question: You can only go back to KSM in this case by calling exit_nickel.png from nickel.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, my fault. I see in the koreader thread that it has been somehow useful anyway.

Question Problem with exiting Nickel on H2O fw 3.12.0

Hi there,

I have a brand-new Aura H2O, which updated itself to FW v.3.12.0 upon initial boot. I successfully installed KSM and Koreader and was able to switch from one to the other without any problem. I then started Nickel from KSM, which also worked fine. Now I want to return to KSM resp. Koreader, and nothing happens.

I keep opening the "books" exit_nickel and switchtokoreader, but all that results is that the respective PNG graphics are being displayed. If I touch them, I get thrown back to the Nickel start page. What am I doing wrong?

Any help is much appreciated!
