kobo start menu crashes after 30 seconds

Hi all,

I have been experiencing issues with Kobo start menu, where my Kobo crashes after 30 seconds of inactivity. I have seen this in the kobo start menu itself (just in the main menu and also inside, for example, info) and inside koreader.

I am using:
Kobo start menu: v. 2014.04.23
Koreader: v. 2014.04-485-gcc46f24
Device: Kobo Touch N905C 3.3.0

Interestingly, I don't experience the crash in nickel.

Please advise any more info/logs I can post.

Mike

If I remember correctly, this was found to be what happens when a timeout is set in Nickel, and Nickel was started at some point before this is noticed.

Luck;

Freeeze sorted thanks!

Yep, that did fix it! This is essentially a workaround though, no? Are there any other logs etc I can provide to diagnose the real issue?

Thanks for your help!

I am happy that you like it! Just in case that you are interested, I am providing a Chinese-English dictionary. A problem is however selecting Chinese words in the books' text. With recent firmwares it is even more difficult. Currently, it might therefore not be very useful. You can find the link in my signature (it is only visible when you are logged in)

Of course, when I restore it, it should rename it from 'Kobo eReaderxxx.conf' to 'Kobo eReader.conf' back.

If you make it in one script, I can then modify it for all the others I might came up with.
Let us see how this works! In the uploaded archive there are three folders. Just merge them with the corresponding folders on your device.
in kbmenu/scripts/back_up and kbmenu/scipts/restore, I provide some example scripts that can serve as templates.
Note that file and path names that contain spaces need special treatment, taka a look at the back_up_Kobo_eReader.conf.sh.
There is an option to gzip the back up file, and also to show an animation (I simply use the Kobo update animation) while the file is being backed up.

I temporarily removed the archive, because it contained sloppy written scripts.

Up until now I found the following things:

Running the back_up_db.sh is working OK.
There are backups created with the time stamp on the filename.
There is a problem with the restore_db.msh though.

When I run it, I get a message
Code:
directory not found:
/mnt/onboard/.kobo/kbmenu/.kobo/kbmenu/backup
I found that it has:
Code:
sourcedir=$ksmroot/.kobo/kbmenu/backup
sourcefilebasename=KoboReader.sqlite"
instead of:
Code:
"sourcedir=$ksmroot/backup
sourcefilebasename=KR.sql
But it must be something else also, because when I run the corrected one I get a:
Code:
usage:
restore_helper.msh
AbsolutePathToSourceDirectory
SourceFileBasename
AbsolutePathToTargetFile
I can't get out of this with the 'Close' button, so I have to reboot.

Running the back_up_kor_persistent.sh seems to be working OK too (There are backups created with the time stamp on the filename).
With the restore_koreader_persistent.msh I get a flash (like when something is executed) but the defaults.persistent.lua stays unchanged (the backup file is not restored).
There is also no presentation of the backup files to choose from (like the older restore_db.msh).

I'll keep on looking at them ...

Thank you for feedback. I removed the archive temporarily.

Right!

The message just means that restore_helper.msh received more or less than 3 arguments instead of exactly three arguments. Therefore, there is something wrong with the arguments passed by back_up_db.sh. The code should be:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
ksmroot=${ksmroot:-"/mnt/onboard/.kobo/kbmenu"}
#####
sourcedir=$ksmroot/backup
sourcefilebasename=KR.sql
targetfile=mnt/onboard/.kobo/KoboReader.sqlite
#####
sh $ksmroot/helpers/restore_helper.msh "$sourcedir" "$sourcefilebasename" "$targetfile"
But even if the script passes this first check, I think, there might be some other problem (I evidently messed the un-gzip part up, when embellishing the script after final testing). Maybe, you better don't try running it. I will check if I get time.

This is strange, since the back up and the restore scripts for defaults.persistent.lua were the very last one that I have tested. And I am rather sure that I did not modify them afterwards (as was the case with some of the other scripts). But who knows? Since you were not offered a list to choose from, you could not select a backed up file, and therefore, nothing was restored. I do not see why the list was not displayed.
I will try to get rid of the mistakes. But it may take some time, since I am rather under pressure right now.

Hi, Tshering,

I made a factory reset, updated to firmware 3.5, and installed the Kobo Start Menu and really liked it. Thank you for this convenient tool you created.

I have one problem. The "Exit Nickle" X worked but led to an upside-down screen of the Kobo Start Menu then screen froze right away. Everything else worked well with external readers. Hoping I could solve the problem by myself, I removed the X png from nickle interface and added it back to the folder - I can't recall if I powered off and on the device before I connected to pc and added the png. When I click "start nickle" now, the screen shows the square dots and light but after 3 seconds the process stops, the screen goes back the Kobo Start Menu.

As you can see, I am stuck with Koreader and Coolreader. I actually don't mind the situation for all my reading but I still need the nickle to update the firmware and probably add other tools in the future. I tried to go into the nickle through koreader using the "koreader additions" but without any success. I also thought about uninstall the Menu first but the uninstall folder didn't provide KoboRoot3.5.0. I was afraid to take further risk trying the KoboRoot3.3.0 which was the highest in the uninstall folder.

Could you please tell me a way to reconnect to the nickle? I suppose the X icon is not only an exit but also an entrance! Too late is the realization. Thank you.

This is a know issue with Aura HD. Please install,

First delete the png again, and start nickel via the menu. Now nickel should work again. Then connect (from within nickel) via usb to the PC, copy the png again into its folder, and savely eject. Go to the library view, and page to the png, so that you can see it. It does not suffice if you see it only on the home screen.

The upside down screen after leaving nickel is a known issue with Aura HD. Install the upadate package. After that the device will reboot and bring you back to the menu, when you exit nickel.

Thanks. I kinda of solved the problem - partially - I can't remember what I did - probably change the setting in script so the device will alternate the booting between nickle and menu. Now the situation is I can go like these:

1 menu - nickle - (exit or stk) - menu
( stk does not lead to koreader directly but to the menu)

2 menu -(by nickle to koreader in additions directly) nickle - (by stk icon) menu

3 menu -koreader - menu

4 menu - (by koreader to nickle in additions directly) koreader - (by exit) nickle - menu

The Exit to upside-down screen problem disappeared. But "Swift to Koreader" always leads to menu not Koreader. The patch didn't create connection from nickle to koreader.
I think I can live with that - I can always start koreader after coming back from nickle to menu. For your reference though. I actually reinstalled the patch, maybe I should do it again.

1 and 3 are as expected; 2 and 4 are not, if I understand correctly what you mean. At the moment, I don't have any idea why it is not working.
