Of course, when I restore it, it should rename it from 'Kobo eReaderxxx.conf' to 'Kobo eReader.conf' back.

If you make it in one script, I can then modify it for all the others I might came up with.

Wouldn't it be way easier to just add a timestamp to the file name?

I also think adding the time stamp is much easier. As models for backing up files with timestamp, and restoring them with original name one could take back_up_db.sh and list_dbgz.msh, apart from that they compress and uncompress the files in addition. But I will try to come up with some more generic scripts that can easily be used as templates, maybe this evening or tomorrow.
One problem with the time stamp is that, if listed in the menu, the file name is often to long to be fully displayed, and then you cannot read the important part. For the database back ups I have abbreviated the names to db_timestamp, but if you back up several different files the different abbreviations might get confusing. One possibility is decreasing font size, and switching to landscape mode. But this has also its limits.

Abbreviation of the name is better than changing the font, cause it does not need a configuration file edit.

And that reminds me of an other wish a had.
The possibility of text or config or lua files editing inside KSM. (I must stop this 'wishing thing' ain't I?)

It does if you add |*.lua to default_filter of .kobo\vlasovsoft\notepad\notepad.ini

Do you have a "koreader" folder in the ".kobo" directory? That is all you need to do to "install" koreader if you are using the Kobo Start Menu. Just copy the koreader folder from the koreader download zip file into the .kobo directory.

I would reinstall koreader and if that didn't work reinstall the start menu.

Luck;
Ken

I've done two complete reinstalls so far, both times without success. When I have some time later on I'll give it a third, and final, shot.

Edit: Tried it yet again and still no luck. The koreader option is momentarily highlighted when I tap on it but nothing happens, i.e. koreader does not open.

Reinstalling Kobo Start Menu cannot help in this case. From your description I take it that the Kobo Start Menu tries to launch koreader, but koreader fails to run. Did you look whether there is an error log file in the koreader folder?
Another question: You said that you did two complete reinstalls and that you tried it again. Did you each time remove the old koreader folder (if there was any)? I am asking because in the past I saw it happen several times that koreader cannot handle one of the files it had created by itself (something like history lists, I cannot remember exactly) in one of its subfolders and this prevented koreader from running. Therefore, having such an automatically created file would result in what you described.

Try to extract the koreader folder from the archive to your hard drive, then copy the koreader folder from your hard drive inside the .kobo folder on your reader.

That's what I've been doing.

The old koreader was deleted on each occasion before doing a copy-and-paste of the new one.

As regards error files, there are so-called 'stack' files which document what I take to be errors. Here's a partial quote from one of them:
