Kobo Discounts: Coupon Codes + Discussion

Some days I think Kobo is just a giant psychology experiment disguised as a bookstore. Or possibly just a strange sort of online game.

I know I lose all sense of proportion in all my dealings with Kobo. Right now I’m stewing because I filled out the problem form on the website when the contest wasn’t working, before it was actually cancelled. I got an email apologizing and saying they’d let me know when it was fixed but now that other people have gotten a 100% coupon I WANT ONE TOO!

I submitted a bunch of email addresses last week but never got even one 90% coupon. Two people here kindly gave me coupons, but I was mad at Kobo for not giving me MORE coupons for all of my made-up-for-the-occasion email addresses.

I “travel” to get around geo-restrictions and I multi-tab to multiply my coupons.

It isn't even about the money really. When there's a book I want I generally buy it without waiting for a coupon. Sometimes when I have a coupon it's difficult to find a book I want that's even worth the discounted price to me.

Back in the real world –

If a sales clerk accidentally gives me too much change, or a waiter forgets to charge me for an item, I always call it to their attention. I once chased someone for two blocks to return a wad of bills that fell out of his pocket as he ran down the street.

But Kobo ----- if they left the store unlocked I’m afraid I’d download every book in the place.

The amount is irrelevant, it's all theft. Whether Kobo knows about it or not is also irrelevant. You are either someone who actively and knowingly commits fraud or you aren't.

Maybe the way that each of us makes use of our codes could be kept to ourselves and not posted.

Kobo is so disorganized It's like taking advantage of a blind person. I feel bad even using my family's emails. My multitabbing the other day was purely accidental - was doing too many things at the same time.
Personally, I think e-books are overpriced, some of them being even more expensive than paperbacks. But of course, I am not a publisher, just a reader, and my opinion doesn't matter.

Anywhoo, I just found a coupon in my kid's email, if anyone wants it:

The most I got from the contest is 65% code and between answering the questions for the past days, I had to complain to their customer service the Kobo Arc HD I won from the contest. After 3 months of virtually not using it, when I turned it on again, the LCD is damaged. When you press something, the screen will press another.

After emailing their customer service, surprisingly they emailed back within hours and after emailing back and forth, they decided to replace the unit. What they sent is a refurbished one that comes with a small brown box. Not the official unit they sell.

I must have triggered Ebates before my multi-tab adventure yesterday. I got an email this morning that I got a $1 rebate for the free books I got yesterday.

I had a weird thing today. I checked one of my collections on my H20 against the same collection on my kobo app and the H20 was two books short. I identified the books and could see them in my library online and on the kobo app, but a search on the H20 couldn't find them. I emailed kobo and straight away got a reply back to say they had renewed the licence and reloaded them into my library (both books were DRM free btw) A sync of my H20 then loaded them.

Why would books vanish from my H20 but still be shown in my library online and in the app?

They just don't seem to have a handle on the part where they deliver what you think you ordered... I'm firmly amongst those who regard kobo with bemusement, amazement, and enjoyment, but if I let myself take it seriously, I can see that it might drive me nuts.

I am probably (well, I know I am) seriously OT here, but I remember still how nicely discounted AND organized FictionWise was until Barnes and Noble killed it :/

I had a problem with disappearing books before. I could see them in my purchase history and I had receipts saved for them, but they were not in my library and when Kobo added them to it after my complaint, the links were broken. In the end they let me download those books... guess in what format.

The solution posted by a member in another thread is to sign out of your device and then sign back in and sync again.

Let's say you need to sign up for a mailing list that interests you, but you're afraid spammers might get your address. We'll call the list "exoticflowers". Sign up with the list using the address "johndoe+exoticflowers@gmail.com". Email to that address will still come to your "johndoe@gmail.com" address even though the "To:" will include that "+exoticflowers" in it.
