Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre

Any eink Kindle can be used to get your Amazon purchases into Calibre (at the moment). Not a Fire tablet, though. And not books borrowed via KU. For those you need an old Kindle.

And yes, you can sideload your existing books to your Kindle if you convert them to AZW3. Amazon won't delete them. Moreover, you can keep your Kindle in the permanent airplane mode after registering it via wifi.

So I googled and chatted with other people with sight challenges and they recommended Calibre - and it was all working out fine until tonight when I bought, paid for and downloaded my new book from amazon, and when I opened up kindle it did an update, without asking, and when I went to convert the book it kept saying that it could not, so a quick search of the Calibre forum and a quick solution ( roll it back, find the hidden "automatically update without asking me button that is automatically set to on without the customer knowing" and turn it off.
and lo and behold I am able to convert the book and now able to have my TTS read it to me.

I know publishers like Amazon offer their own narrated versions of things, but having tried the free audible trial and finding that the narrator was so disinterested sounding, and got both the name of the main character and the title of the book wrong, repeatedly, I uninstalled that very quickly.

I am baffled, having worked with t he government many moons ago on ensuring accessibility in all electronic means, and the total faff it was back then to code, so much easier now to comply, why major companies make it so darn hard for us to get access to things ( I was not blind as a bat back then, it was just part of my job - who knew, an untreated autoimmune disease and bobs your uncle and I am rather stuffed)

So, after all that waffle, I just wanted to say that I am ever so grateful to companies like Calibre who make life easier for us with disabilities, and not only that - keep on top of things and continue to offer advice and support, especially when those who should know better get up to nefarious activities. ,

Not blind . But do use tts. My kindle 2019 uses something called voice view to read books. To listen to books you will need either bluetooth headphones or a small Bluetooth speaker. In this case I would probably recommend the speaker. As headphones are small and may be lost. It can read any book. If you use android I recommend cool reader app. I find it a bit easier because you don't have to reread whole page if interrupted. You can just click pause. Kindle for pc does have tts but you can't adjust speed. Which I like to do. Faster makes it less robotic

I'll answer this honestly.
I know by experience that the number of e-books you can buy and then get refunded "automatically" is 5 per month. Actually you can have more refunded, but over 5 you have to do it through Customer service, and it does tend to attract Amazon's attention after a while.
So my limit is precisely this : up to 5 books a month that I will buy, download, deDRM, get refunded and use, knowing that I only do it for books by dead authors, because it is beyond my understanding that a book published, say, when a writer is 25, who then dies at age 90, will remain protected by copyright way, way over a century after initial publication (with inheritors often doing all kind of sh*t with it at that), it just makes no sense.

Anyone having an issue registering a new e-ink?

So, I finally realized that it wouldn't register till I got updates installed. Was at 4.1.0. Got to Ver 4.1.3 and was able to register (trying registering every time I stepped up the updates). I got a text saying to use the code they texted in the password and register again. Did that and it registered.

After registering, went airplane and when I wasn't paying any attention, it updated to 4.1.4. I hate when this crap does that without permission.

Hope it still works later.

Not at all. My Libra 2 is happily registered with Kobo.

You can do something. Don't buy any eBooks published January 3, 2023 or later.

You can buy a Kindle (that supports KF8) to register to your account so you can download new Kindle eBooks from Download and transfer via USB.

7.2.1 won't work on Mac. It has a typo in the code that breaks functionality for K4Mac. The latest DeDRM is 10.0.3. You need 10.0.3.

Finally, books need to be published before 3 Jan 2023. If after 3 Jan 2023, you need e-ink Kindle.

Having never gone into the physical Kindle eco-system, any recommendations? We’re a Mac & Kobo/Android shop, and have an iMac purchased in 2010, an iMac purchased a couple of years ago, a MBP still running 32-bit but is capable of running 64-bit.

My ebook management is currently on the MBP (and the new iMac for Paul). The old iMac isn’t used much now - I really need to configure Parallels properly and install Snow Leopard on the new iMac and transfer the games across, and physically retire it, but that will be a retirement project for me later this year.

Is that what the OP is doing? Buying books, then returning them after ripping them? I honestly missed them stating that.
