K3/Kindle Keyboard - new software update

I have an old K3/Kindle Keyboard that I use occasionally. I usually just side load my books when I want to add something.

I received an email from Amazon about a new software update for my device:

Your Kindle e-reader requires an important software update to continue downloading books and using Kindle services.

•Plug your Kindle in to charge during the update.

•Connect to Wi-Fi.

•From the Home screen of your Kindle, select Menu or tap the Menu icon. Then choose Sync and Check for Items.

•Leave your Kindle connected to both power and Wi-Fi overnight, or until the update is complete.

The software update will download and install automatically, even if your device is asleep. Your device may restart multiple times during the update process. You will get a final confirmation letter on your device when the update is complete.

If you do not update the device software by March 22, 2016, you will no longer be able to access Kindle services or get the update via Wi-Fi. To resume access, you will need to manually update the software on your Kindle. Please visit our Help page for more details on how to update manually.

Since I normally sideload, I don't think I use any Kindle services that would be effected. I normally keep my wi-fi off.

Has anybody done this update? Are there any significant pros or cons involved?

It isn't a new update. They just want everyone up to date on updates. The Kindle sw update page for the KK shows version 3.4.2, and Ive had that version for a long time.

Oh, I didn't realize. I guess there's no obvious downside to avoiding it then, if it's an old update and I haven't seen any complaints about it.

It and 3.4.1 had some critical SSL fixes, and, um, other stuff.
Fairly low-key updates.


The K1 also got an update, all it does is update the cacerts file.

The latest K1 update has been out for years and years.

I am told the latest Kindle1 update was 1.2

Now it is 1.2.1


I cannot find earlier mention of a 1.2.1 update.



Also, it appears the contents of the update were created on 2015-10-09 by a user named "signdaemon" (with group "signdaemom" )

It would have been handy if the email had said which of my old devices needed an update. I've been digging through boxes looking for devices and chargers. None of the batteries even have enough of a charge to turn on. Gotta wait for a charge just to check the version and compare it with the latest available.

The only update that hasn't been mentioned before is for the K1. fw1.2.1 adds an updated cacerts file.

For the K2/DX/DGX, fw2.5.8 has been out for positively ages and ages.

For the K3, fw3.4.2 has been out since I think August 2015

For the K4NT, fw4.1.1 has been out for ages.

Ok that explains why my K4NT is not updating. It is at 4.1.3.

It's been out since July/August, too (I looked it up).
