Thanks HarleyB

Thanks! That was very helpful.

To see who has given you karma go to the top of the screen and under the MR icon if you click on User CP you can read the messages that came with your karma.
There is a message from me there now!

Edit: Hmmmm beaten by beppe - I really need to learn to be more succinct!

I thought that came under "just because they are bored or any other inane reason"!! But you're right - it does seem to be the main reason for karma in this thread at least.

Who counts as a "newbie" for the purpose of this thread? I've been here for about a year but have no idea whether or not I am still "new".

I've got to say, of all the reputation systems I've seen on forums and blogs, MR's karma may be the most arbitrary. The numbers are absolutely, absurdly meaningless. There is no significance whatsoever in the quantity of karma one receives, or in the quantity one holds. One can assign significance to the quantity one hands out, but it becomes quickly evident that there is no sense of scale.

The feedback aspect is nice--the message prompt to actually say something kind or admiring or silly to someone--and in that sense it promotes goodwill, but the numbers are strictly decorative gibberish.

I didn't read through this whole thread so maybe this has been mentioned, but from personal experience most karma is given out for posting/participating in the threads in the lounge section, especially the silly ones.

And therein lies the true beauty of it all. Enjoy.

(Of course, you probably don't know about the 'Blue' one yet, right?)

***there's a typo in your trypo***

Nope, Wannabe. Whenever I edit a typo I give the reason as trypo. Done it since I joined up two and a half years ago. It's a very weak attempt at a little humour in my apology ... meaning I wrote tripe. Dunno about other countries, but tripe has a double-meaning in the UK; one is the food, of course, the other is 'nonsense'.

To claim I'd been around for over six CENTURIES instead of DECADES was more than a trypo, though, it was a full-blown blunder. Younger visitors might have believed it and asked me for the secret of longevity. I fixed it assap so that the point would be pointed out too often and clutter an already cluttered thread (to which I'm now adding a tad more).

Didn't work, of course. But when you're over 600 years old, you can be forgiven the odd wee slip in judgment.

Och well, all good fun. And a change from the serious stuff ... which maybe this thread isn't any more. I do feel it redundant. Interesting views expressed (many) and I hope we've all taken the thoughts of others to heart. Bestests (not a trypo but telexese). Neil

PS: I also speak fluent Pitman's shorthand. N
