B&N removed download option on all books in "My Nook" library

Yes, same here. Did you just change your payment info? I haven't used B&N for a while, so I had to enter new default payment info before I could redownload and secure my old purchases. But now nothing I enter generates a key that will work with them. I've got eight different keys in there now with every possible form of name I can think of (including just last name as suggested above), but nothing is working (and I've had working B&N keys in the past no problem).

I'm very worried that part of their "security update" includes changing how they generate the keys. Has anyone who has updated their info since these changes managed to make a working key?

There's word on Alf's blog that B&N's key generation has changed. My account still works with my same old key and I'm hoping that the tools will be updated soon, but I guess I won't be spending any more money at B&N until this shakes out.

Hi, new here so apologies if this appears in the wrong place.

To confirm post(s) above, the books I purchased last week from B&N will not run though Calibre despite having tried at least 12 different name/number combinations.

Happy to read on Nook but very much restricts my back-up files.

FWIW...

I just purchased a book, and was able to de-DRM it.

I first tried a free book. I verified it had DRM (calibre reported it had DRM). I than de-DRM'd it and Calibre was able to edit/view it.

I than did the same thing for a non-free book.

I was using old tools, old Nook for PC (I didn't use Calibre for de-DRMing.)

My CC date had expired, and BN made me update it (I just updated the expiration date).

I was confused at first; for the free book, there is a "Download Now" button (before you "buy" it), but when you click on "Download Now", it takes you through the purchasing steps (the price is 0), and it ends up in your library.

Perhaps this is why Nook for Mac has ceased working for me. As late as Oct 4 it was working, now it boots to the splash screen and stops. If B&N is using a new key scheme, the abandoned software is probably choking. I can't even go into preferences and re-sign in - the software never fully loads.

Thanks to this thread I hurried up and used my last ebook credits from the settlement, but I have two pre-orders still in limbo. One came Oct 14, the other releases on Oct 28. I had been using the Nook Mac app, but now I'll need to delve into the scripts listed here to get them


And I have also requested a check for all my settlements thanks to this thread! I'm not loving any of the ebook retailers right now.

Tools are still working for me as of this morning. I tried with both a book downloaded through Nook for PC and one downloaded via the link added with the Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey script.

Double check what name is on your B&N account. At the top of the page on the B&N website click My Account > Account Settings and log in if necessary. The name shown there is what you should use regardless of what name is on your credit card. While there go to the main account page and double check what's listed as your default cc.

You should be able to open it in ADE 2 (and I assume later versions) with that name and number.


Sometimes the B&N files have an extra dot in the file name. That might cause problems. It should just be:

filename.epub

If not, rename it.


Is it an epub? I have a few "PagePerfect Nookbooks" which are actually pdfs and Alf's plug-in doesn't work on those.


If none of those are the problem, then I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of Alf's calibre plug-in.

At this point it's frankly just insulting to continue to suggest that all these people here, on alf, and elsewhere just don't know how to look up their name on the website.

From what I've read the problem is only popping up for people who had to change their billing info. They get a new key apparently under a new system which Alf's can't handle. Hopefully that's can't handle "yet." It's still working fine for people who haven't had to make account changes.

Go into your account and change your billing and report back.

I just tried it on Firefox and it worked. I got the setup file. Never tried it before because it stated the link was for the Windows Store.

When I was trying to figure out why I couldn't get a new B&N key to work, I read through this entire thread looking for solutions or other people having the same problem. It was EXTREMELY frustrating, because more than half the thread has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand, and is instead people arguing about Amazon, or how to install kindle-related things.

Can we please take those discussions to their subject-appropriate threads and keep this related to B&N and their recent changes related to disallowing sideloading of titles? There is important information in this thread, but it's near impossible for people who need it to find it under the weight of all the off topic posts.

It's not meant to be insulting. There's been a lot of confusion in the past, because it isn't always the name on the credit card. Initially, it was purely "name on credit card" and "credit card number" (and - according to my old notes, it's supposed to work with only the last 8 digits of the credit card too).

It's hard to tell sometimes who's a "newbie" and who's a power user, so the first suggestion tends to be - doublecheck the name on your account.

Sort of like telling someone on Windows "did you try a reboot?"

Well, this wasn't the case for me. I had been using the Tools successfully for a couple of years when they suddenly stopped working. I discovered, by trial and error, that I needed to make a new key file. The new file was based on a slight reworking of my name.

Sorry if I offended anyone. I was just letting people know that even though B&N says it should be the name on the cc it's not. And I found this out because I had actually changed the name on my BN account.
