Why are you ignoring the fact that some of us value the ability to be able to download an ebook to a PC other than the one where we have all of our handy-dandy tools/programs installed? And dismissing the fact that THAT can only be done with Amazon books if you own a Kindle device (and now can't be done at all with Nook books)?

I just recently bought the new Samsung/Nook. I must say it is a very nice tablet despite the luke warm reviews it has received. However, I find it ironic that I will no longer read books purchased from Barnes and Noble on a Nook tablet due to this recent policy change.

Its too bad, but it always seemed to me that Barnes and Noble has always been much more vested in pleasing their business partners (read publishers) than their customers.

Why do you think this? This kerfuffle is about not being able to download B&N purchased ebooks from a web browser to a computer. You can still download Barnes & Noble ebooks to Nook tablets and ereaders, as well as to other devices with Nook software.

I think the same thing even though I have a Nook ST. I'm not willing to pay for books I can't easily download and disinfect on my computer. What happens if my ST or the OP's tablet dies? Especially if B&N has since gone belly up? We'd be SOL.

Because, like for everything else, nook for PC is buggy and slow if you have a lot of books. Not only is it buggy and slow, it's no longer supported...

I wouldn't know, I just have it to download my purchases to my PC, I don't use it to read anything or organize any ebooks. The same with Kindle for PC and Adobe Editions.

Why should I obtain and run some POS S/W written for a POS OS that won't even run on any of my computers just to download a book that I can get by clicking a button in a browser I am probably already using and will probably use to do whatever I do next?

Again, it's the degree of effort I have to go through to get something I paid for.

B&N has been, so far, my favorite retailer. Until this unannounced change, I could do everything from my Linux netbook: buy the book, download it immediately through the browser, run Calibre (under Linux), and run the tools necessary to free up the file.

Now, there are more steps, more software involved, more devices involved, etc.

And, of course, I don't like the way this "change in policy" (to files that I do have a legitimate interest in) was enacted without any prior notice.

The idea that it was done to protect "security" ignores the fact that several publishers that are carried by B&N do not add DRM to their ebooks, explicitly so that the (paying) customer has the freedom to read as they choose. Enforcing this security on their products undermines their stated goal.

And, generally, I'm peeved at being treated like a bum by another vendor.

It wont even run on my computer. I had to do it via their Android app.

It is not a problem, it is inconvenient and has to many steps. I would prefer to be able to download the file directly to a folder on my HD and use the name of the book as the file name. As it stands now, I have to open Kindle for PC, find each book I have purchased, right click the book and select download. Then I have to navigate to the Kindle for PC Folder open the file to make sure it is the correct book, close Kindle for PC and then change the file name. This is a pain in the lower extremity. At least when B&N had a download button I could download the book directly to my HD.

You'd encounter it in downloading, if you have a very large library. The software just doesn't handle very large libraries well, in any respect. It's actually better for reading than downloading or organizing; once you're IN a book it's OK.

I know for sure that nook for PC does run under Windows 7. I've not tried Windows 8.1.

There is a big difference between what is being said now and saying that you can't download your ebook purchases anymore - or - that you need to buy an old device to be able to download your purchases. I completely agree that what B&N is doing will not make any of us satisfied customers and that the moves, by all the retailers, to close the gates to their walled gardens is infuriating. This is a position I have taken for a long time now, over many posts. At least B&N is not making my ability to read the ebooks I purchase dependent upon my having and/or maintaining a connection to their servers.

Luck;
Ken

I imagine we'll hear about a sale of the Nook part of the B&N business soon. This is probably related to that.

I've invested a great deal of money in Nook content. I downloaded it all onto a PC a while ago so I'd have those books no matter what. I've had B&N tell me I hadn't bought a book and erase it from my library, and then reinstate it to my library after I called and went over it with them, and then a year later they mysteriously deleted it again claiming I hadn't paid for it. That was a ridiculously frustrating experience and caused me to lose a great deal of confidence in B&N. Their customer service is pretty horrible, especially when compared to Amazon.

I use my Nook for reading old content, but I haven't bought a new Nook book for a while. If I buy something new, I get it from Amazon and read it on my Kindle. I just don't trust B&N to not take a book out of my library, but I have never had any problem with Amazon and they have such great customer service that I feel like if I did have a problem it would be resolved well and easily.

I'm hoping they CAN sell it and someone else does a good job with it. Just as a complete aside and probably means nothing about a sale, but makes for rumormongering, parts of the author portion of the site (where we upload--but not the actual upload part) was "unavailable" for nearly a week for "data migration." COULD just be regular maintenance. PROBABLY is. But they just did other maintenance about two weeks ago.
