I just got mine. I'll post more impressions and pictures later, but for now:

The screen:
  • I unfortunately have a few tiny pinholes on the screen where the light shines through - waiting to see if they bother me when reading, but I find this very disappointing.
  • This time around, I see no smudges or artifacts glued between the layers.
  • I cannot detect any color blotches in daylight, but I will confirm tonight. (I think this is really happening - wait, let me pinch myself!)
  • The illumination of the actual screen is much more even, however, I have about an inch of the border in lower left hand corner that is much brighter than the rest - will have to see if it bothers me, as I read in complete darkness at night, with the Kindle close to my face. This is similar to some of the devices I got last year.
  • The screen with the light off is whiter than on my PW1, but I got my PW1 when it first came out, and it is my understanding that later devices were a bit whiter.
  • The contrast seems to be a tad better, but I could be imagining it.

The rest
  • The software is awesome, for the Vocabulary Builder if nothing else (I'm into languages, so this is like the holy grail of ereaders for me).
  • Touch is more accurate (never noticed how it wasn't on my old PW until now!).
  • Page turns are way faster, but I wonder what the speed difference would be if I didn't have 200+ books on the PW1.

I think you can tell by the tone of this entry that I am not as over the top happy as I thought I would be... That's because of the pinholes

The only thing I can think of is adding a really broken font that stops the Kindle from rebooting.
By adding some font that the Kindle doesn't like.... maybe an analogy... similar to adding a book that it doesn't like? There are dozens of threads in this forum on that topic.

No, it's only logical. It was a bug, not a feature. (at least from their point of view).
If that is the case, then I have no doubt that the first KPW1 firmware upgrade that incorporates one or more KPW2 features will remove this bug/function.

I wouldn't even be surprised if both Kindles would run the same firmware at some point, only omitting features that need the new hardware; such as the screen refresh after more pages. I think, if Amazon wanted to, they could actually port some of the features to the Touch, but I don't think they will.

I wouldn't be suprised either. But the decision is left to the gods of code at Lab126, and their ways are mysterious.

Thank you! Those pinholes have me a little worried. I didn't encounter them with the three PW1s I tried but I know several of you did. I think Blossom did for sure.

You could report it as faulty and request another one, that's what I would do, and did do when I got my PW1 last year.

It took until number three to get a PW1 I'm happy with

xendula, you might try a good eyeglass cleaner just to make sure there isn't some residue on the outer surface of the screen causing the pinholes. I doubt that is the issue, but it doesn't hurt to give it a try. Occasionally I see what look like pinholes on my iPad screen but a good cleaning gets rid of them.

I remember cleaning mine thoroughly with glass cleaning spray.

Seriously though, I just have to say, the PW1 really looks awful in that comparison. What was Amazon thinking??
Most people here thought it was just great.

The 2's light is noticeably warmer than the 1's. Is that the case in real life? Warm is much better, especially at night.

And yet a significant number of us thought the screen was bad. Apparently we were not alone if you look through the Amazon reviews from actual owners.

Thanks for the pics. Is it me or does the text look really faint and washed out.
