I'll guess that Adolphe Sax invented the saxhorn as well!

That's one of those odd ones. Leonardo certainly drew an idea for a parachute, but didn't ever make one. I suppose it could be useful if you fell off the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the top of a cathedral.

Sorry Paul, it wasn't William Addis who invented it.

Sorry Orlok, it was indeed you who got Budding in England. I also missed a point for pdurrant for Kurzweil being born in the USA. (Keeping these scores gets very complicated!) Here's the list again. I'll leave it for another few hours if people want to guess any more, and then wrap it up. I found it interesting that we have so many very useful things and have no idea who actually invented them or in some cases, how early they were invented.

1. Harry Coover, 1917-2011. Superglue. Orlok 1 point.
2. Humphry Davy, 1778-1829. England. Miner's safety lamp. Orlok, 2 points.
3. William Addis, dates unknown. Invention about 1780. England. pdurrant, 1 point.
4. Raymond Kurzweil, 1948-present. USA, Optical character recognition. pdurrant, 2 points.
5. Alexander Fleming, 1881-1955. Scotland. Penicillin. Orlok, 2 points.
6. Jean-Joseph Etienne Lenoir, 1822-1900.
7. Montgolfier brothers, 1740-1810. France. Hot air balloon. Orlok, 2 points.
8. Adophe Sax, 1814-1894. Saxophone. Stitchawl, 1 point. Belgium. Bilbo, 1 point. Saxhorn. Bilbo, 1 point.
9. Faust Vrancic, 1551-1617. Italy. (Actually Republic of Venice.) Bilbo, 1 point.
10. Edwin Beard Budding, 1795-1846. England. Orlok, 1 point.

Scores now are (I think!):

8 Orlok
3 pdurrant
3 Bilbo
1 Stitchawl

It might help to know that Faust Vrancic was also known as Fausto Veranzio. But then again, it might not!

Based on that, I'll take a guess at Italian for the nationality.

To be nitpick, there was no such thing as Italian back then. He was born in what is now Croatia, in an area which was then part of the Republic of Venice. Just about impossible to get, so I'll give you a point anyway for being as close as possible in the circumstances!

Bilbo now on 3 points.

Okay: I think I should declare orlok the winner. Herewith the rest of the answers:

1. Harry Coover born in the USA.
3. William Addis invented and manufactured the first toothbrush. (He was in prison and wanted to be able to clean his teeth more satisfactorily. He made and sold them after he got out, and his company is supposedly the forerunner of Wisdom toothbrushes.)
4. Raymond Kurzweil also invented the flatbed scanner.
6. Lenoir was born in Belgium and invented the internal combustion engine and the motorboat.
9. Faust Vrancic invented the parachute (i.e. made one that worked as opposed to drawing one as Leonardo did.)
10. Budding invented the lawnmower and the adjustable spanner.

Over to you, orlok.

Sign of the Four

Interesting quiz, Bookpossum.

This one is, I think, going to be a nightmare to keep track of the scores (one point for each correct answer, up to 4 points per question), but here goes:

ONE QUESTION FOUR ANSWERS
1. Name the four British prime ministers who where bachelors while in office.
2. Name the four Pevensie children in the Chronicles of Narnia books.
3. In which four films did Humphrey Bogart and Lauran Bacall co-star?
4. What are the legendary four rivers in the Garden of Eden?
5. What are the first four elements on the periodic table?
6. Which four US Presidents died of natural causes while in office?
7. As of 2013 who are the only four women nominated for a Best Director Oscar?
8. Which four events make up tennis' Grand Slam?
