Harald I of Denmark had constant tooth ache, his front teeth were so inflamed they became dark, his nickname was Blåtand, in English Bluetooth. The Swedish company Anoto developed a reading pen, essentially a small scanner aimed at students, and wanted it to communicate wirelessly with laptops. The CEO of that company was a history buff and named the technology after the king.

Great details, Kumabjorn! A point for you.
The OED adds: "[Harald] brought together various Scandinavian territories under his rule; used with allusion to the way in which this technology facilitates communication between devices and hence brings them together." |

2. OK - she destroyed Dewey's political career - calling him "the little man on the wedding cake" - something from that?

By one of those ungodly coincidences that occur so frequently in this forum, I received as a gag gift for Xmas a T-shirt with a variant of her most famous quotation on it: "If you haven't anything nice to say about anybody, come sit next to me." and I read about her .... a truly savage but entertaining wit of her time.

More clues:
2. Alice's namesake item has a song named after it, first written for a 1919 musical and later performed by (among others) Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. 5. FitzRoy James Henry Somerset (1788–1855) was better known as Lord [answer]. A loss he suffered after the Battle of Waterloo led to his preference for the clothing-related thing named after him. |

Number 5 must be Lord Raglan I think. Is a Raglan an item of clothing?

These people all have something named after them. But (just to make it more of a challenge) each of them is better known by another title or surname, and (with one exception) it's the more familiar form that has lent itself to the item.
One point for each correct item, and bonus points for an explanation of why it was named after that person and/or cool details. 1. Harald I of Denmark (c910–985) - Bluetooth. Harald was nicknamed "Bluetooth". He brought various Scandinavian territories together. Bilbo, 1 point; Kumabjorn 1 point. 2. Alice Roosevelt Longworth (1884–1980) 3. James Thomas Brudenell (1797-1868) - Cardigan. The OED simply states that the cardigan (at that time a knitted wool waistcoat) was named for the Earl of Cardigan, "distinguished in the Crimean war". Bilbo, 2 points. 4. Jeanne Antoinette Poisson (1721-1764) - the Pompadour hairstyle associated with Madame de Pompadour. Poohbear, 2 points. 5. FitzRoy James Henry Somerset (1788–1855) - the Raglan sleeve. Bilbo, 1 point. Bilbo, 4 points Poohbear, 2 points Kumabjorn, 1 point Still two points available for Alice Roosevelt Longworth, and one for Lord Raglan. Last edited by Shayne Parkinson; 01-12-2014 at 02:52 PM. |
