Scissors date to 1500BCE in Egypt, perhaps back as far as 2000BCE.
Paper originates in China in 200BCE.
But granted, Papyrus (close enough to paper) dates from at least 2500BCE, long before we have evidence of scissors.

So how did we play rock, paper, scissors without scissors? Rock and paper is a rather dull game!

So has the question become what item, that can be represented by some hand configuration, predates scissors and can be used to cut or other wise damage paper (Papyrus), but may be rendered dysfunctional by a rock?

OK, I haven't won one for a while, but here goes an easy 10 question Art & Literature quiz (1 point each):

1. Who wrote the poem 'If'?

2. At the end of the novel 'The Day Of The Triffids', on what island do the two sighted protagonists Bill Masen and Josella Payton eventually find refuge?

3. Which region in the Pacific ocean is also the name of a character in the ‘Dr. Doolittle’ stories?

4. Which French artist, born in 1834 was best known for his paintings of ballet dancers?

5. Shakespeare's "Hamlet" was the Prince of which country?

6. Which artist is famous for his statue ‘The Thinker’?

7. Which British artist achieved notoriety in 1976 after confessing to faking old masters?

8. Who was the author of ‘Pygmalion’?

9. Franz Hals painted his most famous work in 1624; what was it called?

10. Who was the pilot hero of Captain W.E. Johns stories?
