Close, the city in question is about an 1 1/2 drive away from Split.

I'm afraid that my knowledge of the geography of Croatia is also poor. So I'll just name the only other city in Croatia I know of; Zagreb.

Sorry, it isn't. It does start with a Z however...
I realize now that this question was probably too obscure for me to post here. If everyone would like, I could post the answer and then someone else could post a new question. |

Hmmm...as this is a tricky one, I broke out my trusty atlas (a paper-book, no less!). Based on it beginning with a Z and being not too far from Split I think it might be Zadar?

Wow, that really does look like a beautiful place to live. Great photos as well.
After the city populations debacle, I'll stick with a cryptic crossword clue this time that I definitely know the answer to; Confused carthorse plays many instruments (9) NB. Why does Zadar have 4 patron saints. |

The Saints are: Zoilo, Simeon, Chrysogonus and Anastasia. Apparently, Zadar took four patron saints, as their protection was needed because the city was often attacked, being on the crossroads between eastern and western Europe. (It was demolished by crusaders in 1202, despite being a christian city; it was ravaged by the Huns, etc.)

While Mortis is offline, I'll throw out a question:
During World War I, an artificial cotton fabric made from wood fibers was invented: cellucotton, which was used in gas mask filters. After the war, the surplus supply of cellucoton was marketed as what product? |

Fortunately for my ex-wife, she married into the Clark family after we divorced. Those Clarks being the other half of Kimberly-Clark, the folks who made the stuff. After the war Kimberly-Clark marketed the stuff as sanitary napkins.
(Side note: As an out-of-control skier, I skied through the big bay window of their ski house in 1981. I believe this is how we were introduced to the family and she met her future husband.) Stitchawl Last edited by Stitchawl; 02-10-2011 at 08:02 PM. |
