Here's a public service quiz. Recently hantavirus was found in Yellowstone and 10,000 campers were possibly exposed.

Hantavirus is carried by rodents, especially deer mice. The virus is found in their urine and feces, but it does not make the animal sick.

It is believed that humans can get sick with this virus if they come in contact with contaminated dust from mice nests or droppings. You may come in contact with such dust when cleaning homes, sheds, or other enclosed areas that have been empty for a long time.

Quiz: What percentage of people with hantavirus die?

I don't think I'm giving away much by saying that I'll looked it up and I'm wrong!

Luckily, it doesn't seem to cause mice any problems.

I read this story with interest because we stopped in those very tents, albeit quite a few years ago.

It said, from memory, that it was fatal in a third of cases (so 33%).

That's the percentage currently from Yellowstone. Two out of six.

According to the US Gov it's higher. They probably count untreated cases which will have a higher mortality rate.

I have used this as an excuse not to clean for years...

Wasn't it Yosemite, not Yellowstone? When I said we stopped there, I meant Yosemite anyway.

Back in a bit with a question.

Right then, questions about Yosemite National Park;

1. How many visitors does Yosemite attract each year (within a quarter of a million either way)?

2. Around 20 of what can be found in Merced Grove?

3. Who signed the bill that first set aside areas of Yosemite as park land?

4. What is the name of the highest peak in Yosemite?

5. In square miles, what is the area of the park (within one hundred square miles either way)?

As a avid hiker/climber who has spent months wandering around and climbing upon... I will recuse myself from answering most of these. But the most obvious, even to those who don't know the park, is #2
I shot this in '69. That's my son's mother standing there for comparison.

I suspected #2 might be trees. Knowing nothing of Yosemite, Giant Redwoods?

It wasn't a big tree. My ex-wife was only 36" tall. Actually, my current wife isn't much taller than that... (She small but she mean. )

3. Theodore Roosevelt?
4. Half Dome?

A beautiful, magical place we visited back in 1999.
