I had a pet rock in 1955. But they didn't start selling them until many years later. I caught mine myself.

Tamagotchi started selling here in '96 but I don't think it left Japan for a couple of years.

Just a side bit of fun stuff: I worked for a Mountaineering/Sporting goods shop back in the early 70's... well before the "Pet Rock" phenomenon. The owner sent me down to the creek to bring back a bucket of little round stream stones, about an inch or so around. He went to a local print shop and had little stickers printed that said "Made in Vermont" and had me stick them on the side of each stone. He placed the bucket next to the cash register and stuck an Index card on a stick that said "Genuine Vermont Rocks - 25¢!" I can't tell you how many times I had to go back to that stream and get more rocks, while the shop owner laughed himself all the way to the bank! I always wondered if the person responsible for the 'real' marketing job of "Pet Rocks" got his idea right there?

OK, a couple or four logic puzzles to solve:
1. There are three switches downstairs. Each corresponds to one of the three light bulbs in the attic. You can turn the switches on and off and leave them in any position. How would you identify which switch corresponds to which light bulb, if you are only allowed one trip upstairs? 2. How many times can you subtract the number 2 from the number 32? 3. If you had a 5-litre bowl and a 3-litre bowl, and an unlimited access to water, how would you measure exactly 4 litres? 4. The day before yesterday I was 25 and the next year I will be 28. This is true only one day in a year. What day is my birthday? |

Keep the first bulb switched on for a few minutes. It gets warm. Switch it off, switch another one on, walk into the room with bulbs, touch them and tell which one was switched on as the first one (the warm one), the second one will be on and the third can be easily identified. |

2. Once? After the first time, you are no longer subtracting from 32.

2. Once - 32 - 2 = 30.
