I am reading a biography of Hitler at the moment and he had the French surrender signed in the same railway carriage that the WW1 armistice was signed in.

I think the wording of your question makes it unlikely, but could it be that (if it still exists)?

OK... some hints, because you started off in the wrong direction..

One relic is German, the other is Japanese.
When I was standing on them, I couldn't tell anyone.

Yes! I was about 60 ft under water.

But where? Google permitted.

EDIT: I just checked my dive log... I was actually at 80ft when I was able to touch both.

OK... another hint;

These were sitting on a seabed 120ft down beneath an island first (Western) held by
Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan for Spain, then the US, then by Germany, then by Japan, then re-taken by the US. Now it is completely independent.

SolRaven should be along shortly. It's her usual time to appear. If you two don't get it by then, and SolRaven hasn't an idea, I'll post the answer around 11:20 before I leave the house.

... and you would have been correct. It IS a US territory, but completely independent. Federal income taxes don't go to Washington coffers, but remain in Guam. While they 'can' vote in US elections, they have no votes in the Electoral College so their votes really don't count. It was a member of the Republic of Micronesia but separated from them when declaring indepenence.

The two shipwrecks are the German W.W.I "Cormoran" and the Japanese W.W.II ship "Tokai Maru" leaning against each other at the bottom of Apra Harbor in Guam. It makes for a very interesting wreck dive, and where the two are in contact, you can 'stand' with one foot on relics of each war! There are several other wrecks that can be dived in Apra Harbor, the Japanese "Kitsugawa Maru" and the "American Tanker," but I think the Cormoran/Tokai Maru dive is the most interesting of all!
