Since my last question along vaguely similar lines roused so much response:

An English writer, born in the 19th century, had quite a personal connection with a senior New Zealand politician, although (as far as I know) the writer never visited New Zealand. Who was the writer, and what was the connection?

This time the writer is someone whom I'm sure you've all heard of.

I've racked my brain and came up with nothing remotely close. I can think of quite a few British writes, but I have no idea about relationships with New Zealand politicians. For that matter, almost my entire knowledge about NZ is that it has two main islands. Then end. Oh... and is beautiful. The end again.

If you find the writer, the rest will be easily discovered.

He (a clue there) was a prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction, but today is best-known for his fiction in a particular genre. Identify that genre, and you won't be far from identifying the man.

Aha! Would that be the illegitimate child with Amber Reeves? Daughter of William Pember Reeves? Whom Wells met in the Fabian Society?

Shayne (with a y) seems to have gone off line. So here's a new question to ponder.

Polar explorers that had to winter in the ice faced the unique challenge of how to protect wood-hulled boats from the tremendous pressures of the constantly moving ice. The most unique solution, and AFAIK, only tried once - was that devised by Thomas James when trapped in Hudson Bay in 1631. And it was successful. How did Captain James protect his ship over the long winter months?

Sorry to have been slow responding - I had to move the sheep to another paddock, then I was on the road, then I got stuck behind a truck...

A perfect answer! More about Amber here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Reeves

That makes her parting of the way with Wells sound a bit more benign than other accounts I've read. According to Amber, she was so distraught on the boat back to England that she wanted to drown herself, and was only prevented by her hobble skirt, which made it too difficult to climb the railing (rather heavy symbolism there, perhaps). She also said, when told that Wells had based his "Ann Veronica" on her, that she'd no idea how he could have picked up any idea of what she thought about anything, as he never listened.

Her daughter was completely ignorant of her relationship with Wells until that first meeting. Amber called her into the room, and said something like, "This is Mr Wells. And he is your father."

did he use the 'round bilge' method? where the ice pushes the boat up so it sits on top?

I don't know how he did it, but were it me, I'd try to fill the hull with water and let it freeze, so the pressure would be equal. That seems to work in my mind, but I really don't know how it would work in reality.

Close enough to win - oh over-educated one.

He sank his ship and moved his crew onto shore for the winter. In the spring they had to manually hack the ice off the ship and re-float it -- the ship was fine but this was so labor intensive, it was never repeated.

You're up!

There is a spot where I have stood on the relics of two world wars at the same time, my left foot on the relic of W.W.I and at the same time, my right foot on a relic of W.W.II.

This is the only place in the world where this can be done. Where was I, and what was I standing on!
